My Dog Had E Coli in Her System

Just a quick follow up on my poor little Precious baby and her test results.

I received a call from the vet this morning.  The culture came back and revealed a strain of e. coli. *shock*  I’m told this is common if you live in close quarters (an apartment community) with lots of other animals.  When people don’t pick up behind their pets, other dogs are exposed to the feces, which spreads the bacteria in animals.

Ironically, BabyGirl was also sick a few days before Precious.  She had nausea, a tummy ache, diarrhea and vomiting.  I treated her with “Big Mama” home remedies and it only lasted about a 24 hours.  She went to school the next day and I haven’t thought anymore of it until now.  Precious is always up under BabyGirl, follows her around the house all day, sits next to her (or in her lap) on the couch and sleeps on her bed.  Hmm…can animals pass bacterial infections to humans?

The good news is, the vet gave Precious an antibiotic (Clavamox) and it’s strong enough to treat the infection.  The first day, we saw immediate results.  Woo Hoo!  I’ve been directed to keep giving her the antibiotic until it’s gone - only two more days left.  We have to cover the pill in peanut butter to make her take it, but hey, do what ya gotta do.  We also have a follow up appointment next week to make sure her urine sample is normal.

The bad news is, I don’t know where she contracted the bacteria so it’s possible for her to get it again.  Based on my research, some strains of E Coli can be deadly…in animals AND humans.  So I reported it to the property management company.  Hopefully they will notify other pet owners to make them aware of a possible bacterial strain in the neighborhood and remind them to clean up after their pets.  I might also report it to the local humane society.  Don’t they keep track of these kind of things?  Maybe it’ll prompt them to test something in my neighborhood.  Who knows. *shrug* Whatever the response, it’s worth a few phone calls.

To help my Precious fight any future bacteria or UTI infections, one thing I will do is change her diet to strengthen her immune system.  The vet recommended an all natural diet that has little to no preservatives added.  Hmm…I need to do some research on that.  I’ll have to make gradual changes so it won’t disrupt her digestive system - or my wallet!

I’ll tell you what.  If I didn’t know it before, I certainly do now - owning a pet is a HUGE responsibility.  But I love my Precious baby.

Hired Help

I’m off today, just lounging around the house and looking a little raggedy.  Think baggy sweat pants, Mr. EC’s sweatshirt, old workout sneakers, and wrap scarf still on my head.  So I go out to walk my dog right.  Not even 10 steps away from my patio door, this lady walks up with the cutest little Yorkie I’ve ever seen.  Immediately, Precious gets REAL excited because she likes to play with little boys.  Typical bitch! LOL!  And of course, I stopped to chat while the dogs played.

Here’s the conversation:

Single Ma: Hi, cute dog you have there.

Old Lady: Thanks.  The one you’re walking is cute too…and energetic!

[Precious jumping around, the little boy trying to sniff her butt]

SM: My little Precious just recovered from an illness so she’s full of energy now.

OL: Oh, I know the owners are relieved.  So how many do you walk a day?

SM: Huh?

OL: How many dogs do you walk a day?

SM: Just mine.

OL: …and how much do you charge?

SM: *face scrunching up* I only walk my own.

OL: *surprised look on her face* Oh…you live here? *pointing at the door*

SM: *losing interest in the conversation real fast* Yeeeeees.

OL: *looking me up and down* Really?

SM: *tilted head with a WTF look*

OL: Oh I’m sorry.  I thought you were their dog walker.

[on cue, Precious finally pees and we walk away]

She better be glad my mama taught me to respect elders.  Hmph!

Caring For an Adult Pet

Yesterday, I was officially inducted into the “real responsibilities of a pet owner” club, only after 7.5 years of owning a pet.  And I have my paw prints to prove it!  Allow me to explain…

Around 5am, my BabyGirl ran into my room to wake me up.  You hear me?  5am.  That’s ONE HOUR before my alarm goes off.  Ok, I’m lying.  About thirty minutes before my alarm goes off and another thirty minutes of hitting the snooze button six times.  Anyway, she woke me up to tell me that our 7.5 year old Maltese - I guess that’s 40 something in dog years - was peeing blood all over the house.  “What???!!” was all I could muster as I dragged myself out of bed to see what she was talking about.  Unfortunately, she was not exaggerating at all.

THE DISCOVERY

At first, I thought my eyes were deceiving me.  I mean, it was still dark o’thirty and my azz was half sleep.  But what I saw were little red spots all over the carpet.  WTF!  I rubbed my eyes and followed the trail.  Guess who I found hovered in the corner like she had done something bad.  The mere sight of her wagging her tail in a submissive position broke my heart. :-(

THE CONFIRMATION

I scooped her up and took her outside to potty.  Sure enough, she urinated a stream of blood.  Gross, I know, but bear with me.  I knew I couldn’t panic because it would make my BabyGirl cry so I had calm down and hide my emotions.  In 7.5 years, we’d never experienced a real pet emergency so I didn’t know what to do.  As a distraction, I told BabyGirl to put her food and water down while I searched for the vet’s number.  When BabyGirl said she wouldn’t eat or drink anything, my heart raced.  By the time I found the number, I had tears in my eyes.

THE FIRST CALL

My vet’s office didn’t open for another 2 hours.  Shyt.  Then I called the vet’s emergency hotline.  Thankfully, a very friendly voice answered.  I told her why I was calling while holding back my tears.  We talked for a few minutes.  Listening to her calm voice forced my heart to beat normal again.  Although she provided limited information, she was very helpful and sincere.  She told me it could have been many things - UTI, bladder infection, kidney infection, stones, etc - but it wasn’t an “emergency” emergency.  So instead of going to the emergency hospital, I decided to wait for my vet to open.

THE WAIT

My Precious didn’t appear to be in any pain, but she looked really sad.  She wasn’t following us around the house as usual but she watched our every move.  Somehow, I convinced BabyGirl to go to school.  I told her our Precious would be alright but to call me during lunchtime for an update.  After BabyGirl left, I locked my Precious in her crate, spot cleaned the carpet, took a shower, ironed three outfits, chose not to wear either, made up my bed, made up BabyGirl’s bed, researched her symptoms online, fixed something to eat, didn’t eat it, swept the kitchen floor, and anything else I could think of to keep from worrying.  Every time I would look at my Precious, she was watching me.  It was like she was trying to say, “mom help me.”  Gawd it was awful!

THE VET VISIT

At 7:20, we loaded up the car and headed to the vet’s office.  By the time I arrived, it was 7:35.  They had already spoken with the emergency hotline, pulled her file, and was waiting for our arrival.  Their fast response and preparation made me relax (a little).  I felt like my Precious was going to be in good hands.  I explained the symptoms (frequent urination but in tiny amounts, bad smell, traces of blood, no appetite, etc.) and they immediately took her to the back.  I couldn’t stand to wait around and count the minutes so I went to work.  I left my cell phone, blackberry, and office number and asked them to call me as soon as the doctor had a diagnosis.

THE DIAGNOSIS

Around 9:30am, when I saw the number on my caller ID, my heart stopped.  It was the vet.  I didn’t feel like saying “hello,” so she was greeted with a fearful “yes” as if there was only bad news on the other end.  The vet explained what she had done: examination, xray, urine sample, blood sample, sent culture off to lab, vaccination of antibiotic and pain med, etc.  I was told it would take a week for the culture to come back because they had to examine it, place something in it to see if it would grow or change shape, then examine it again to rule out anything life threatening.  No obvious problems showed in the xray, but for a dog of her size, this wasn’t uncommon.  Her white blood cell count was high - sign of infection - and she passed blood clots 2x while urinating - sign of UTI or bladder problem.

THE TREATMENT

I could barely breath while listening, but she reassured me that the meds would treat any immediate problem.  She said she was going to prescribe an antibiotic for the infection and a pain med to make her comfy.  But she wanted to keep her until after 5 for observation and try to get her to eat and drink.  At this point, being in the vet’s care was better than mine so I had no objection.  When I picked her up around 5, the vet had already gone for the day.  However, she left 2 pages of notes for me (my Precious ate food and drank water, her urine stream was now more pink than red, she seemed energetic and happy), 2 prescriptions, diet instructions (bland for 3 days - white rice and chicken breasts only - then gradually re-introduce regular food), call if no improvement in 3 days, follow up appointment and another urine sample in 2 weeks.

THE RELIEF

When my Precious was brought from the back, she ran and jumped into BabyGirl’s lap as if seeing her family made her the happiest pup in the world.  For the first time all day, I exhaled.  Although she’s not 100%, I can tell she feels a little better.  She’ll be on meds for a few weeks, confined to non-carpet areas, and eating bland food for a few days, but I’m soooooo relieved.  When the culture comes back next week, I will breathe again.  Until then, I’ll follow doctor’s orders and throw in an extra dose of TLC.

THE COST

The total cost of this scary ordeal:

Vet visit, tests, xray and meds: $413.89

Follow up appt in 2 weeks: ~$112

Effect on work: 2 hours late + 8 hours of stress and anxiety

My Precious health and happiness: PRICELESS

In 7.5 years, that is the most I’ve EVER spent on a pet expense at one time.  Although it didn’t hurt to drop a few hundred dollars to make sure my Precious was ok, I can only imagine what my thoughts would have been if she needed more extensive treatment - or worse, surgery.  I’ll be honest, if a single pet expense gets closer to four figures, the love for my dog will be weighed against practicality and reasonableness.  I hope I don’t have to face that decision anytime soon, but now that she’s an “adult” dog, it’s a reality I need to consider.  The life expectancy of her breed is 15-18 years.  Since she’s only 7.5, that means the best years of her life are yet to come.

I never thought I could really love a four legged animal.  All this time, she was “BabyGirl’s responsibility” unless it suited me.  But after yesterday, I realized that she’s etched in my heart forever.  Gawd I love my Precious!

Financial Updates at Single Ma’s Queendom

Lots of random thoughts, so I’ll do a random update post:

Unexpected Money

When I filed my taxes this year, I had to claim the relocation benefits I received from my last employer as income, but I couldn’t write off the relocation expenses as deductions. Weird, I know, employer requirement, hard to explain. Anyhoo, because of this, I had to file a separate form with my employer and they have a process to evaluate what my tax liability would have been without the extra income. Any excess between what I paid and what I should have paid is sent to me via a refund from the employer, not Uncle Sam. Long story, short. I received the unexpected refund this week. Over $1,200.

Emergency Fund

As of today, I made the final transfer to meet my $20k e-fund goal! Because of the unexpected refund above, the balance now sits at $20.7k. I also set up a $100 bi-weekly payroll allotment for the e-fund. All extra above $20k will be earmarked for “non-retirement investing.” When it reaches $3k, I will open that long awaited Vanguard account, then redirect all extra money to to the new account.

Payday

My payroll problems were finally corrected. Benefits, tax exemptions, allotments, 401k match, retro payments/refunds, etc. - everything is kosher now. Thank da lawd! July has 3 pay periods and I plan to spend the extra cash on my rental property.

Medical Expenses

As of yesterday, the braces are completely off. BabyGirl was given two sets of retainers plus a night guard. I also made the final $250 payment, a total of ~$4,000 for 2 years of orthodontia care. Her teeth are beautiful, but with all the back and forth visits, I’m glad it’s over!

Precious’ vet bill this year was $248.69, which is $65+ more than previous years ($185 in 2007 and $177 in 2006). I’ve never had an annual vet bill more than $200, so I asked for a line by line itemized report of this year and last year. Although the secretary tried to explain the difference, I had to see for myself. About 10% was due to regular inflation that occurs every year, but one procedure was an additional $40 by itself. WTF! The reason? They send the culture to an outside lab for testing/examination and they have to pay extra for shipping/transportation expenses. In other words = FUEL!! I tell ya, this fuel crisis is hurting everything!

Car Insurance

Due to pure laziness, I didn’t research for better rates. My new 6 month (Jul-Dec) premium is $409.10 and it’s due next week. I thought this was a savings from the $468 that I used to pay, but I forgot it was reduced to $406.30 last December when I increased my deductible from $500 to $1,000. So in essence, this 6 month premium increased by $2.80. Not a lot of money, but it definitely shouldn’t be going in the wrong direction. That’s what I get for being lazy. I’m going to pay the premium in full this time, instead of the monthly payment plan. Other than saving the $1 processing fee, I just want one less bill to worry about every month.

Rental Property

My tenants are moving out this month and I’m meeting two potential tenants tomorrow morning for a scheduled tour. One is coming at 10 and the other at 11. It’s a 2 hour drive and I’m not looking forward to it. After the last tour, I’m meeting a girlfriend for lunch. She’s offered to show the property for me in the future, so I won’t have to drive down there again. But if the property isn’t rented by the end of this month, I’m turning it over to a property management company.

Edit to Add: Thank you all for bringing the blog problem to my attention. I appreciate all of the emails. I don’t know what happened to the rest of the post or why it was cut off HOURS after I published. In the original post, I provided a few updates about my summer vacation plans and my feelings about BabyGirl’s summer away, but it’s gone now and I don’t know how to fix it.

While I’m on the subject, I haven’t been blogging regularly because I’ve had quite a few computer issues lately. I don’t know if I have a computer virus or if my blog has been hacked - maybe both. So much for the Norton All-in-One Computer Protection, huh? My spreadsheets are damaged, which means all of my expense tracking and net worth details for the entire year are GONE. I’ve tried to do a system restore and file recovery, to no avail. I also keep getting “404 errors” when I publish or update posts on my blog. And some evenings, I can’t get online at all or the “high speed” connection is extremely slow. The latter may be attributed to the terrible weather we’ve had in the past few days, but trying to get online or attempting to write a blog post is challenging.

It’ll take weeks to get my spreadsheets back in order and I’ll need help with the blog issue, but everything will be fixed - eventually. If it aint one thing, it’s another. But eh, so is life. *shrug*

Blog wit’cha soon.

A Lazy Sunday Evening
