Bleeding Money
One of my blogger/twitter friends is planning to read the book The Power to Prosper by Michelle Singletary, which requires a 21 day financial fast, to help improve her finances. I considered joining her, but I punked out when I realized that I couldn’t commit to zero non-essential spending because now is a terrible time for me to go on a financial fast. Over the next few months, my life will be thrown into a financial tailspin due to the following: 1) my weight loss, 2) BabyGirl’s prom, 3) BabyGirl’s graduation, 4) our move to a cheaper apartment, 5) our vacation to Paris/London, and finally 6) BabyGirl’s departure for college.
I was just sitting here thinking about all the miscellaneous expenses I will incur as a result of these monumental events and other things I need/want as well:
Me
- entire wardrobe (down 30 lbs, only 27 lbs from my happy weight)
- wii fit plus and balance board
- polar heart rate monitor
- glasses
- 1/4 carat diamond earrings
- clear bubble umbrella
- Girlfriends or Sex in the City complete DVD set
BabyGirl
- shoes and accessories for prom
- dress for graduation
- class ring, yearbook, and other senior year memorabilia
- colorful set of luggage on wheels
- mini fridge, microwave, printer, and TV
- dorm necessities
Home
- professional packers/movers
- bedroom set (after move)
- blender/juicer
Vacation
- portable DVD player (?)
- adapter for outlets
- something to carry passport, money, etc.
- pocket-size translator book
- lots of stuff I can’t think of right now
I have an estimated budget for most of these things but not all of them. When I look at the number I have so far, it’s enough to let me know that I will be bleeding money for the next few months. Ouch! *passing the collection plate*

Have you read the Fabulous Financials comment policy lately?

LOL @ you passing the collection plate. One thing I’ve learned about you in this short time is that you are a planner, just like V. You will get it done, I know it. :)

Scratch the portable DVD player, you will be having so much fun that you will not even open the DVD player. We have taken the laptops with DVDs and have never even looked at them. Plus the are plenty of movies available on the flight to and from Europe; unless you get stuck with only one movie playing over over.

Prayers have gone up. I pray your baby girl and her classmates get home safely. I pray they are comforted while in a foreign land and that the powers that be will continue to exercise sound judgment.

Ditto on no need for a portable DVD player. Your flight should have seat monitors where you can select your own movies during travel. Unless you have plenty of time when you’ll be in the hotel room, you won’t watch many movies. I will say this, there wasn’t much along the lines of English TV in Paris. In London we were able to catch SVU and some old US sitcoms. We weren’t in Paris long, but I don’t recall much on TV. So if you think BG will be bored, just take a laptop.
I know how you feel about bleeding money… Maybe we can do the fast together later in the year. After your vacation but before football season ;-)

The portable DVD will be for the flights only. If I’m going to be on a plane for 20+ hours round trip, I’ll need entertainment. Plus, I want the flexibility to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it. The question mark is there because I haven’t decided if I want to risk taking my laptop. I’d rather lose/break a cheap DVD player than my laptop/personal data.

Dorm room stuff is expensive! Not really, but I needed a lot of U of H gear when I was in college: sweatsuits, hoodies, shirts…don’t forget about those..
I don’t think you’ll need a DVD player. They should have monitors on the plane for tv. If you want it for the flight, consider taking crossword puzzles, uno cars, other card games, mini chess/checkers/tic-tac-toe games, magazines and a book instead. Put some movies on your ipod and take that! My suggestion. You wont get a chance to be bored in Paris.
We’re going to Rome this week (granted the volcanic ash clouds die down and the flight restriction is lifted for Friday!!) and I love this travel store: http://www.distantlands.com/
They have EVERYthing that you never considered. Check on their reviews on yelp, all 5 stars. Hope that helps.
