As if I Need a Reminder
BabyGirl is away from home for the next two weeks, attending a summer program that is educational and expected to be loads of fun. The two week program came with a bill of over $1,500 so I hope it will ignite the passion she once had for a hobby and teach her some new techniques. Another benefit is that she gets to work with some of the most respected faculty in academia and meet other like-minded students from around the world. How cool is that! I hope it’s an experience she’ll remember for the rest of her life.
Well today makes day two and a half, not that I’m counting. And so far, she’s having a great time. She seems to be fascinated with her roommate, who is from Turkey, and she said all of her suite mates are very nice. On the other hand, it’s always an adjustment period for me to be home alone. I have to walk the dog, pick up poop, wash the dishes, get the mail, fold my own laundry, really miss my child when she’s gone. But that’s ok, I’m sure I’ll be just fine by this weekend.
*bad thoughts*
While I try not to be the overprotective mom who wants to speak with her every single day, she’s trying to respect my need for frequent communication and set her own boundaries for independence. We began this week with one phone call each day, around bedtime usually. But already, I’ve been relegated to email. Here’s our exchange from this afternoon (unedited, as noted by her use of ALL lower case and missing punctuation):

Yes I left her a copy and I spoke with her to make sure she received it. She said she was going to email you the reporting instructions and confirm your start date for July 6. When you receive it, let me know.
You make me proud babygirl.

SM,
Don’t feel bad. My mom and I talk everyday but I went out of town for the weekend and I didn’t really expect to talk to her. Do you know she called me both days? I’m about to be 29!!! :)

This is so cute, she will always be your baby girl.
I am excited about BG’s opportunities this summer – the program and her job. This summer is another example of what a great Mom you are.

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: She’s so lucky to have a mom like you. I don’t just mean a mom who will drop $1500 on her educational opportunities, but one who also provides all of the critical and intangible support, guidance and foundations for making the most of such an opportunity. She won’t waste it because you’ve taught her so well. Lucky, lucky girl. :)
