Balancing Finance and Fitness
You may save a little money every pay period, but you still won’t obtain financial freedom. If you’re in debt and continue buying things you can’t afford – you’re going to stay BROKE. Why? Because you’re spending more than you earn!
You may exercise 2-3x per week, but you still won’t lose weight. If you continue eating crap like cheeseburgers, french fries, cookies, and cakes – you’re going to stay FAT. Why? Because you’re eating more calories than you burn!
To be successful, both finance and fitness require a balanced approach.
- Save money AND reduce your spending
- Exercise AND reduce your calorie intake
You can’t do one without the other. Wait…yes you can. But the effort expended will be 10x as hard and the journey to your ultimate goal will be 10x as long. Don’t ask me how I know. If you do both, you’re guaranteed to see results over time.
- or -
You can ignore some (or all) of this and create your own balanced formula. Shoot, I do!
Saving money is easy (for me), but reducing spending is hard. To do so means I can’t shop when I want. WHAT?!? Instead, I create my financial balance by ‘earning more’ money.
Exercising is easy (I’m lying, work with me here), but reducing calorie intake is hard (for real). To do so means I can’t eat the foods I love. OMG, kill me now!! Instead, I create my fitness balance by finding ‘healthy’ substitutes.
I’m learning that Finance and Fitness don’t have to be a battle. The key is simply finding the balance that works for YOU.

This blog is all about Finance, Fitness, Fashion & Fun - the sum of my life. If you like what you've read, feel free to subscribe via (feed reader) or (email) to follow along.

This is so true and right now I’m having problems with both. As far as finances, I started by reducing my expenses then built my savings and all the while my salary kept going up. Before I bought my current home I was sitting pretty with savings and still being able to do what I wanted when I wanted (for the most part). Now that I pretty much depleted my liquid savings to make a downpayment on my house – I have to rebuild it. I’m finding it hard to go back to limiting my spending.
Conversely – about a year ago I was 10 pounds away from my goal weight. I was at the point where I could have a good meal and just work it off later. The move messed up my schedule and while I have no problem exercising, it’s hard getting my regular eating back on track.
I NEED BALANCE!!! LOL
I’m not consist in my finances or fitness. I’ll stay focus for a minute and then next I’m all off. If my life (house, work and car) is not organized my all world is OFF. I know that’s why I’m can’t stay focus. Too Much Clutter!
Thanks for the posting, I needed it. It’s encourgaging to know you are focus with a plan and working it.
Great simple and direct post. Now how bout mixing both goals?
Save money (by jogging in a park instead of shopping at the mall) AND reduce your spending (by eating healthier homemade food instead of eating at restaurants).
two birds, one stone?
Single Ma – The last two posts were phenomenal. I think in our pursuit to rid ourselves of debt we subscribe to a particular methodology without tweaking it to our particular needs. I like how you found/created balance in your financial plan that fits your lifestyle.
Also – what happened with Saturday’s outing with Baby Girl and her guy friend?
I talked about it on Twitter. You have to follow me to get the personal life details. [-SM]
I hear you but it gets easier. For me, fitness/eating well is very easy. I allow myself a cheat meal once per week (but rarely use it) and I eat a proportioned mini-meal every 2 hours. It becomes a habit but I never feel deprived and now, when I eat something “bad”, it doesn’t make me feel good (physically and mentally). With spending/saving, I use the same approach: build a habit, allow room for a bit of cheating but don’t take it if you don’t HAVE to. When I see the results on my body and in my bank account, I feel more empowered. Oh – and I never, ever, ever keep “bad” foods in my home. I know myself too well :)
Glad to know it gets easier. I look forward to being where you are. I’ll get there in about a year. [-SM]
Achieving equilibrium essentially is getting to the point where all wants and needs meet and are in harmony. Difficult place to get to, however I know you Single Ma will do it in no time. You are extremely focused and dedicated, be it your work, your finances, your health or you family, it seems that you are up for any challenge and you come out a winner most of the time. Good luck!
P.S. I might not see you for a while, have a little situation with my BG, not sure if it is like before (hope not) or might be nothing to worry about, probably will not visit you for few weeks. Try to miss me a little :-), I will be back.
You go, girl! I’m working on something a bit similar. Three girlfriends of mine and I have a little wager. Whoever gets a 4 pack (not 6 pack) on or before July 3rd, the loser will have to pay the winner $50 bucks. I’ve been getting my tae-bo on 4 days a week. I got this wager in the bag!
As for the finances, Moving to a cheaper apartment is going to help the budget a lot. I’m also pursuing a 2nd job. If I score one in this recession, jackpot!
