A Ray of Sunshine
It’s a beautiful weekend and I feel blessed to have my renewed strength and health. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably know that I’ve been sick for over a week. I want to thank everyone for keeping me in your prayers and checking on me. I really appreciate it!
You only get one body and one life. Please take care of yourself.
After a week of spring break vacation and another week of being sick, I haven’t worked out in over two weeks. My body feels like mush. I plan to slowly ease back into my routine until I’m working out 4 days/week again.
I attended a baby shower yesterday, spent ~$100 on assorted items (bibs, onesies, socks, blankets, diapers, etc.). I noticed my gift was probably the smallest and least expensive. I was amazed by the other gifts. I’m talking swing(s), bassinet, crib, nursery furniture, etc. Who said we were in a recession?
All of my friends are just starting to have babies and mine will be off to college in a year. I keep getting the question “doesn’t that just make you want to have another one?” Uh, no hayle naw!
I returned the Canon camera. I’m sure it would have taken the best pictures in the world, but it was ugly. I’m a girly girl. I need quality AND cute.
Remember in my last post when I said a “cheap” vacation was a 5 night all inclusive, round trip, all taxes and fees for two people, less than $1,500? Well, I found it. 5 nights in Cancun at an all inclusive 4 star resort for $1,433. Then the price went down to $1,428. But my instincts told me to wait. A few days later, my mom called at 2am warning me that Mexico had a deadly breakout of the swine flu and 68 people were dead (and the number is rising). Call it woman’s intuition…
I wish I could meet more of my readers in real life. I keep a small circle of friends and I’m very selective about who I allow into my personal space. But I can see myself becoming friends with several of you.
Many of you seemed to enjoy my “I Can’t Afford It” post. Thank you! I’m glad it prompted some of you to think twice about how you spend your money.
After an entire grading period of tutoring, BabyGirl earned an “A” on her report card in Trig. Slowly but surely, she’s learning that hard work (and mommy’s money lol) pays off. That’s my girl!
I’m not a very forgiving person. I don’t hold grudges or bad feelings, but I don’t hesitate to cut someone off when they’ve crossed me wrong. When I make that decision, I consider the person non-existent. Second chances are rare opportunities.
I’m going to the movies today, then to a cookout. Oh shit, I’m late! This won’t be a lazy Sunday but very enjoyable nonetheless.
I have to go now, but I’ll be back with more throughout the week. Stay tuned for my responses to readers’ questions, how I’ve decided to redecorate my bedroom, girl talk about men, men, and more men – including Mr. EC! – and of course, money.
I hope everyone is having a FABULOUS weekend!

I was recently at a baby shower too, and was amazed at what people spend for gifts. I live in a much more rural/low cost of living area. The mother-to-be did not do a gift registry. I expected people to spend around $20, but it seemed like most gifts would have cost at least twice that. What is expected? What should a budget-concious person spend to show she cares but not be cheap?
I was also amazed at the retail shopping going on in my area when I was shopping yesterday. The stores seemed very busy – similar to the Christmas shopping season. I realize the recession is hard on certain people/industries, but people are still spending!
Isn’t it amazing how a little sunshine always makes you feel ten times better? Best of luck with BabyGirl’s up coming senior year, it is not a cost effective year at all. Every time you turn around people are wanting money from you for different things.
I’m so glad you are feeling better. I love this post it might be one of my favorites of yours. I can relate so well to you in it. Even though $100 is out of my price range for a shower I am watchful of what I spend and I’m always amazed at how much others spend. Like holy moly!! I used to feel a bit bad about it but not anymore, not when it takes from myself and my daughter. I always put a lot of thought into it and also I put personal touches.
For instance a lot of times I buy some of those baby hangers, a baby laundry basket and some little things to go inside then I buy cloth diaper pins and recieving blankets. I use the laundry basket as the ‘box’, the receiving blankets as the ‘wrapping paper’, and the diaper pins as ‘tape’ and I make a beautiful card that can be used as a momento. This is for people I’m not that close to. The ones I’m insanely close to I usually do something scrapbook related, pre-decorated pages ect… I spend a lot of time on it. I have all the supplies so it is on the cheaper end for me but very time consuming and lots of love go into it.
You talking bout making friends with readers and you’ve yet to come out drinking with me! I’m still waiting on you to visit the Queen City!
Yeah, my job is going crazy with this swine flu, emergency meeting and email flying all over the place.
I’m glad you didn’t book that trip but you know I had to LOL when I read your Mom called you at such an ungodly hour to warn you. Too funny!
Glad you’re feeling better. You are so right – we only have one body, one life so we must take care of it. Congrats on BG’s A – I love A’s! On baby showers – since most of my close friends are babyless, I usually spend about $20 – $30 when I go. But when my BF had one, I was ready to drop a G on one of those ‘grow with you’ bedroom sets. I didn’t but if it would have been on the registry, I would have bought it, LOL
Baby shower gifts are expensive. I normally only spend about 50-100 since I only go to close friends baby showers but now that I’ve taken up knitting and crocheting… Every single one of my friends will get a handmade baby layette. They don’t even need to wonder what their gift will be anymore although I have been told my gifts are FAB-U-LOUS. But anyway, yarn is expensive anyway, well the kind I like anyway. I got Champagne tastes with a kool aid budget. LOL
I just went to a shower. My limit was $50. I stuck to it and got good mileage out of that $50. If I wasn’t on a tight budget, it would have been $100. I have also been impressed at others’ shower yields – maybe people are saving over the pregnancy???
There are 36,000 flu-related deaths in the US every year. And how many of those 36k die from a normal strain of the flu? Very few. But how many people have DIED from the swine flu? 100+ and the number is rising DAILY! [-SM] I am watching for vacation deals in Mexico and snatching up the cheapest one because a lot of other people will be wrongly scared to travel. Good for you, have fun! Most normal people would rather be safe than sorry. The risk of my LIFE is not worth saving a few bucks on a cheap vacation. [-SM] Mexico City does not = Cancun on the map! Glad you know your geography, but do you know what the word “pandemic” means? I’ll give you a hint. The swine flu isn’t confined to one local area. Please pay attention to the World Health Organization reports. [-SM]
