SM, you really defy everything I have ever known about the workplace – changing jobs after 1 year with the company (many firms do not want to hire so-called “jumpers”) and now you are being interviewed for a promotion with the company that you left few months ago. What is your secret? Besides hard work, how do you leave them in awe of your abilities? In todays market, all I hear is that no one is irreplaceable, however it seems that it is really difficult to replace YOU wherever you go! I know it is education of course, however I know that it is not the only thing. Charisma maybe?
In any case, I know you deserve to get that promotion, no questions about it.
“Firms do not want to hire so-called “jumpers” – this is an old view of management. Gen X and Yers have progressive goals, we’re not loyal, we’re not relying on a pension after 30 years, and we don’t stick around for the “golden parachute.” As a result, managers today realize that employees’ values and expectations have changed; therefore, they must adjust to the new tide – especially if they want top talent.
My most recent career move was not part of my original plan and they realize this. It was an unfortunate situation that forced my hand because I refuse to be unhappy. The entire experience drove lots of change in the org, so I guess it was a good thing. But under normal circumstances, I usually get antsy around year 5.
IMO, what sets me apart from the average bear is that:
1 – I ignore systematic rules and create my own.
2 – I don’t follow the beat of anyone’s drum.
3 – When someone says I can’t or it’s never been done before, it becomes my mission.
4 – The word “no” is motivation.
5 – I focus on building relationships instead of driving processes: when you make people feel important and empowered, they want to please you.
6 – I reward everyone (not equally), even mediocre performers because everyone has something to contribute.
7 – I don’t mind tooting my own horn OR yours.
What others have said about me in 360 reviews:
1 – I consistently deliver timely, efficient results.
2 – I work hard and play hard.
3 – I recognize and reward exceptional talent.
4 – I’m strict but fair.
Besides, if we ever meet, you too will realize that I’m just a lovable person. ;-)
Good luck with everything SingleMa! I hope it all goes well for you
Good Luck Girl, You Got It!
Go get ‘em, Ma! I’m channeling you for my phone interview tomorrow ;)
Good luck on your phone interview tomorrow! [-SM]
Good luck on the job – I hope it is all you want.
No doubt in my mind about the lovable part SM :-)
However it is your determination and drive that is extremely fascinating to me
your subordinates are lucky to have you as their manager and mentor
