Career Advice

Do not EVER wear a RED suit to a new job on your first day.  Especially if you’re taking on a new leadership position.  It sends the wrong message to your subordinates.  And other supervisors don’t have time to address their questions/concerns on your behalf.

That is all.

      What sort of message?

A message you wouldn’t want to send being the new kid on the block. [-SM]

People should know that. Did someone do that at your job?

Lawd, yes! And I’ve been hearing about it all day. *sigh* [-SM]

I think you have to take into account industry and company culture. In my company, a red suit on day one — even from (or particularly from) an outsider — would totally fly. In many departments it would be a clever and bold move. Other departments in my company (Finance and IT, primarily) are much more conservative, but I doubt a red suit would generate the gossip it did at your company. But my Fortune 500 company is in a trendy industry.

Sounds like the new person at your work really failed to do a basic assessment of company culture! Low emotional intelligence quotient or just a bad strategist?

Details! Who wore it and why? Is there a way to tell the story and still protect the, um, innocent?

I think I can agree with that, especially if you were rather conservatively dressed during the job interview process. I would save the red suit for the second week or maybe the second month on the job, particularly if it were a bright red suit.

Oh goodness you couldn’t be more right about that. I think after 3-6 months it’s safe to do that…

:: hands on hips :: now you know I need more explanation. Don’t worry…I’ll wait :-)

I would like to apologize for my incredible ignorance but maybe my parents didn’t raise me right. I have absolutely no idea why a red suit can’t be worn on the first day in a leadership position. I have never thought twice about someone wearing a red suit on their first day (or any day). I would, however, like to not make this mistake if it actually does offend people. So a little more information would be helpful.

Aren’t red suits popular not because of Sarah Palin?
