Personal Finance in Tiny Soundbites

A few weeks ago, I received an email from a company called Nuru and they asked if I would like to try their new personal finance product.  It was described as:

Personal Finance is a deck of 30 ultra-thin, waterproof, and durable pocket-sized plastic cards that take potentially complex topics and break them down into easy, everyday language, using simple examples to make the concepts stick. Such topics include investing, loans, credit, insurance, retirement vehicles, etc.

I get marketing emails all the time and ignore about 90% of them.  The other 10%?  I may try the product, but you won’t hear a peep if I didn’t think it was blog worthy.  However, this one was different because I thought the concept was pretty cool.  Tiny cards.  Personal Finance.  Everyday language.  Examples.  Cool!  I responded to their email, they delivered, and I actually like the product!  This is the personal finance deck that now belongs to Single Ma:

It’s really a deck of cards sprinkled with personal finance information!  Isn’t that cute? LOL

Seriously, I had to spend a little time reading over each card and figuring out the purpose of this little deck.  As I read them, I was fascinated by the information.  Then it dawned on me - I must share this with my fabulous blog readers!

There is so much about personal finance I don’t know, and to be honest, the financial world can be quite intimidating.  Wouldn’t you agree?  I know most of you are saying “heck yea!”  Well guess what?  There are many personal finance topics I avoid on this blog, simply because I don’t know enough about them to speak with authority.  Imagine us, the blind leading the blind.  Not a good look!  So I don’t touch it.  Further, I don’t have the time to research advanced topics.  Besides, there are many serious personal finance bloggers that do it for us.  So I entertain you with my personal life and attempt to weasel in my financial lessons learned - then hope and pray you enjoyed what I had to say. LOL!

These little cards are exactly what regular people (read: me and you) need.  I’m not saying our personal finance IQs are going to soar, but we’ll learn a little something something.  The PF deck covers a variety of topics and really does break them down into easy, everyday language.  The topics range from the basics (definitions, credit card usage, and fixed rate vs. variable rate loans) to the more advanced (retirement planning, annuities, ins/outs of the stock market, and expense ratios).  They even address the current subprime mortgage crisis!!

I like these Nuru cards so much, I’m going to share a topic with you every Friday until I get through the entire deck. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.  If not, imagine being BabyGirl and having to read them everyday because your crazy mom gives you a personal finance quiz every Friday. HA HA HA  She’ll thank me one day. :-)

If things work out as planned, I may have a few personal finance decks to give away for FREE.  Yea baby!  You know Single Ma likes to share the love! LOL!  UPDATE: It was just confirmed, two more free decks are being shipped to me tomorrow!  Woo-Hoo!  Thanks Luke and Brett!!

Oh, and if you’re interested, Nuru offers other topics (golf, understanding your car, interior decorating, first aid for everyday living, first aid for emergencies, exercise anywhere but the gym, etc.) and the tiny decks are available at the Nuru Shop.

I checked out the link, but only found decks on golf and personal finance. Where do I find the one on exercising w/o the gym?

      Hi Single Ma,

I went to the website and almost ordered a deck, but noticed that they do not have a security icon or privacy policy that I could click on to inspect. And I am obsessed with my credit rating. Did you order yours over the phone?

I didn’t order anything, they were sent to me by the company. For the other questions, I’ll see if I can get a company rep to stop by and answer them for you.

The website only has the financial deck and the golf deck. where does one find the other ones? This sounds really neat I like the idea.

      Hey all!

This weekend, I received an email from Single Ma asking me to address the questions you had posted on Fabulous Financials. Let me say that we are super excited to be getting your thoughts and feedback on what we’re doing. In short, thanks for your interest in NURU, and thanks Single Ma for facilitating this discussion!

Alright, first things first. The NURU website you currently see was launched primarily to get us out of the gates about a month ago. We’re launching our NEW site in the next 10 days, and I promise, you’re going to love it. It’s BEAUTIFUL.

Even more importantly, the new site answers all of the questions you’ve asked above (good questions, I might add). That being said, let me briefly address them now.

First, Tonya’s question, concerning security and privacy.

      Security
As far as security goes, we use the same internet safety procedures that you would find through other secure retail sites.

The first point to bring up is SSL (secure socket layer) technology. All of our transactions are encrypted by an up-to-date SSL certificate: this means that only NURU has the ability to encrypt and decrypt (and thus SEE) the information that is transmitted on our site.

You can verify that this is happening in a few ways. First, you’ll note that all of our payment pages are https:// (the “s” stands for “secure”) as opposed to just http:// addresses.

Your browser can also verify that our website uses an up-to-date SSL certificate (in many browsers you’ll see an image of a little lock…click on the lock icon and you can see the certificate, verified by GoDaddy, WebTrust, and KPMG). Again, this certificate encrypts, or encodes, everything that you transmit on our site, making your transaction safe and secure.

Finally, its important to note that NURU does NOT store any credit card information on our servers. That information is sent directly to Authorize.net (over 212,000 online merchants use Authorize.net for online payments).

      Privacy
We understand the sensitivity of your personal information and NURU will not share or sell your personal information with other parties. When you order with us, we ask for your personal email address so we can communicate with you about your order, send you an order confirmation, and occasionally tell you about exciting NURU news (e.g. when we launch new decks). You may opt-out if you no longer wish to receive communications from us.
All other personal information is used for order processing purposes and is kept private and secure.

Hope that helps! All of this info will be on our new site. In the meantime, if you have additional questions, please feel free to shoot me an email at luke@nurushop.com or to call us toll free at 866-665-6878.

In response to Navi and Isela’s questions concerning additional products.

Again, the current site was intended to get us off and running. When we launch the next version of the site (in the next 10 days), you’ll see the next round of product available for order and, in some cases, pre-order.

Stay tuned for decks such as Exercise Anywhere (i.e., Beautiful Body without the Gym), Emergency First Aid, Everyday First Aid, and Understanding Your Car (how to make it last longer, what to do when things go wrong, how not to get ripped off, etc.)

Also note, that this only represents a fraction of what you will see over the next 3-6 months. Expect NURU decks that provide knowledge on all sorts of topics that enrich your life. That being said, we’re always looking for feedback. If there are topics you KNOW you want to know more about, we’d love to hear it! Simply send us an email at sales@nurushop.com, using the Subject Line “Deck Idea.”

      Thanks!

      Luke
