2 Plead Guilty to Bribery Scheme

From the Washington Post:
An Army contracting officer has pleaded guilty to involvement in a $9 million procurement scandal in which his wife was accused of carrying shopping bags full of cash to banks in the Middle East. Investigators say it is the largest bribery case out of the war in Iraq.

Fraud, waste, and abuse.

It’s just a symptom of the selfish priorities that make people unable to trust each other and their government. Incidents like these add up, assault the public psyche, and make the world a scarier place to live. White collar crime hurts us more than many care to discuss.
I work in the Government Contracting industry – and this just sickens me. We contractors get a bad reputation for ‘gouging’ (see KBR’s Iraq work), and it makes those contractors that are honest, ethical and follow the rules have to work harder to win the jobs and prove that we provide value for the government’s dollars. Then you see stories like this – there is significant corruption on the Government side that costs everyone (taxpayers and the military itself). From 12 years’ perspective on this industry, I feel that the Government’s procurement system is pretty broken.
Wars have a built-in fraud mechanism
This war is no exception-this is not the first case and I bet it will not be the last
I am taking Forensic Accounting courses and we discussed live cases last fall-similar scandals
This was was never intended to help anyone, but for GWB friends to profit from oil and contracting deals-this was a war of dishonesty and greed from the beginning so it is no wonder that small fish felt they had the same right to the piece of a pie as the big fish did
Our tax dollars went to work the minute those idiots on a Capitol Hill approved the war
It’s just basic dishonesty. I am sure these 2 people have also been doing other shady deals all their lives.
We have more than our fair share of these kind of slimy people in our country. And some of them we have to refer to as “Your Honourable”.
How I wish I could line them up in the local town square and give them 50 lashes.
