Sex and The City
![]()
My friends and I went to see Sex and the City yesterday and we had a fabulous time. The movie was followed by lunch and drinks (watermelon margaritas are tasty LOL), a trip to the mall, then a birthday party that was catered by Carlye’s. A fabulous day indeed!
For someone who has never ever watched an HBO episode, I can finally understand what all the hype was about because I absolutely loved it. I cried, laughed, cheered, AND was mesmerized by all of the fabulousness. Shoes. Handbags. Oh my! From the plot, setting, fashion, and characters - this was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a LONG time. Speaking of the characters…
[warning: possible movie spoilers to follow...]

Carrie (2nd left): she’s a writer, fashionista, and love struck puppy. She can be a little naive at times, but her 3 best friends keep her grounded and pick her up whenever she’s down. Her heart has been raked over the coals, but time and time again, she finds the strength to give love another try. She wants the Cinderella love story but soon learns that fairytales are only in books. Once she accepts this, she realizes that a pair of fabulous shoes are just what the love doctor ordered. Who knew! LOL Just kidding! She realizes what she was doing wrong all along - allowing society to dictate her actions and expectations.
Samantha (right): she’s an independent woman who defines life on her own terms. Although it would be nice to live the life that society thinks every woman should want, she’s aware of her own “needs” and refuses to settle for less. She isn’t perfect, and doesn’t claim to be, but she loves herself and all of her imperfections. She has a successful career, an amazing sense of self confidence, and knows how to make things happen. You say the word and Samantha will take care of it, so consider it done. You need something, she has the connections. You’re in a bind, she’ll help you get out of it. You want to know how to do something, she’ll find the information within minutes. She’s lovable, loyal, brutally honest, funny - and happy just the way she is.
Miranda (2nd right): she’s a superwoman - mother, wife, and successful attorney - she wears many hats and tries to carefully balance them equally. Unfortunately, she forgets that some things are a higher priority than others and requires extra attention. But because she does so much every single day, she expects her efforts to be appreciated. She’s very focused and driven, as well as methodical and logical - all good traits, but she often loses touch with the human element that makes mistakes. She can be a little stubborn at times and fails to realize that matters of the heart are more important than matters of the mind. She’s a work in progress.
Charlotte (left): she has the perfect life - perfect home, perfect husband, perfect family - everything one could possibly dream. She sees the good in all things and tries to be the voice of reason when her friends are upset, angry, frustrated, cynical, or just plain acting silly. Sometimes she goes a bit overboard and makes you wonder “what world do YOU live in?” but she does have a tiny mean streak that remains hidden until absolutely necessary. But for the most part, her life is a fairytale where everyone lives happily ever after.
My friends have pegged me as a Samantha(60)/Miranda(40) mix. Ha! I can’t even deny it! LOL
Which character(s) do you most identify with?
Do you have SATC-like girlfriends?
What do you love most about the characters?
I loved these characters so much, I wanted to buy every season of the HBO series so I can watch them from beginning to end. With a little time to spare before our lunch reservations, we went on a hunt for the DVD collection. I discovered that Best Buy had the entire collection on sale for $109.99, but I couldn’t bring myself to drop that kind of money on a TV show.
So I’ve decided to be creative and use multiple resources.
BB didn’t have the individual seasons, so we trekked to Circuit City where I found Season One on sale for $16.99. The DVD almost paid for itself because it came with a free movie ticket - valued up to $10.50 and expires June 29. Now I have a reason to see the movie again. Fabulous! LOL
I also have another girlfriend who owns a few seasons already, so I may have to “beg, borrow, and steal” Jennifer Hudson style. LOL! Hmm… Maybe if I buy her a bottle of Shiraz, we can have a pajama party and watch all of the old Sex and the City episodes together - *hint hint* Pam, I’m coming over! LOL Then whatever she doesn’t have, I’ll try to get copies from my local library.
I’ve also been told that the CW network plays reruns every weeknight at 11pm. I think TBS does the reruns every now and then as well. But if all else fails, this website has everything you need. Shhhhh, you aint heard it from me. LOL
What is your favorite SATC scene (movie or TV)?
I’m off to watch Season One on DVD.
I hope everyone is relaxing and enjoying this beautiful Sunday!

Thanks Single Ma- Been reading you for a lonng time but I dont always comment because I am hella lazy. I hope to see this movie soon-oh yeah thanks also for the …website:)
I am a Miranda. I have friends that are Charlottes and Carries but not alot of Samanthas. I too enjoyed the movie and plan to see it again. I can’t wait for the DVD so that we can see all of the behind the scenes and bonus features!
Oh Single Ma - you are in for a treat! Costco also has the other seasons (that are NOT edited - which, seriously, you need to see - some of the lines are hilar and you can’t get that in the TBS version) for cheap. I’ve watched it from the beginning and while my friends say I’m a cross between Charlotte & Carrie, I’ve looked to Samantha for inspiration because she is a publicist that has it all. (Yeah, I know - she’s a movie character but how often do you see a publicist have it all together in a movie).
Anywhoo - my favorite eps are in S. 4 so when you are close to S. 3 finishing, let me know and I’ll treat you to S. 4 because as fabulous as you are, this season will have you going “ARUUUUUUU?”
So you saw the movie without ever having seen an episode? How was it to follow? I’ve never seen an episode either and everyone wants to go see it… I’m just afraid I’ll be completely lost!
I am so glad that you enjoyed it. I really did as well. There was a lot of fabulousness in that movie. Every one of them looked good.
Hmm, one of favorite scenes in the series in when Carrie has run off to Paris and Big asks to meet the ladies for lunch to bascially beg them to let him go after Carrie.
I have SATC type friends - definitely. I even have a very Charlotte-like friend. I call her steel encased in velvet. She is very, very sweet and a true romantic, but when push comes to shove and things happen she will not bend.
I also have a Samantha-like friend, (minus the many, many men). She is the person I call when certain things must be done. She will handle my business without missing a step of her own. Plus she is just plain funny. We were out in NYC with another friend who had two small kids in tow and I just had to call her Samantha as we were eating lunch. The look on her face was priceless.LOL
What I love most about the characters is that, no matter what, they are there for each other. Not there as in, “I’ll call you”, but there as in “I will drop my life to help.”
Personally, I am probably Miranda(70)/Charlotte(30) with two pinches of Samantha thrown into the mix. Go figure!
PS My favorite “fabulous” scene in the movie: the closet. Girl, I could live in there!
Hmmm I may hafta take a trip to Costco and Circuit City. I really want to see the other episodes before the movie.
That said, we did go out for dinner and drinks with intentions to see the movie but after discovering that we all bought the wrong movie TIME through Fandango we just forgot the movie and continued on with dinner. I was too tipsy to drive down to the theatre any way LOL!
We had 10:05, 11:15 and 11:50 so there was no sneaking in as we’d planned.
I’m absolutely jealous…………..now that’s the kinda girls day out I’m talking about..
Wonderful girlfriends and great places to have fabulous drinks (sip sip)
I have never seen the tc shows. However, I plan on seeing the movie next weekend depending on my schedule.
I love the show and can’t wait to see the movie. Every week I go to the “movies for mommies” show and this week is SATC — I’ve been waiting for this movie for about 2 yrs now!! Glad to hear it’s good.
I’m totally a Charlotte minus all the money (I’m middle class). ..and when I was pregnant I became a bit of a hippy. I used to be Miranda, before she or I had kids (you’ll see what I mean when you watch the show.)
I am a huge fan of the show and I went on Saturday with a few girlfriends. Single Ma, do not watch the reruns/edited version on television. Believe me, you want to watch the uncut DVD episodes. By the way, I’m definitely a Carrie!
the movie was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!
I’m a Miranda/Carrie mix with a splash of Samantha!!!!
I’m the career-minded, mother, who is also the hopeless romantic with a lil *oooh I’ll keep that to myself* lmao hahahaaa
Yes my girls all have a lil SATC in them.. and I have 2 real life Charlotte’s!!! the entire movie was great.. the fashion was GREAT.. shoes GREAT bags.. OMG TO DIE FOR!!!! whew.. yes! ok..
Sleepover? did somebody say Shiraz??? Whooohoooo
Which character(s) do you most identify with?
~I’m most definitely a Samantha/Miranda.
Do you have SATC-like girlfriends?
~I do have a lot of SATC like friends…Most of them are Miranda and Carrie’s.
What do you love most about the characters?
~What I love most about the characters is how “real” they are. I see myself and my friends in them.. (if that makes sense)
I’ve never seen an episode before and thought the movie was great! Well…with one exception…the sex scenes were a bit too much for me. Call me prude, but that is just my opinion. One, ok…6-7 too much. I thought there was too much nudity and too graphic. I guess that’s why they call it “Sex” and the City!
Otherwise the story line was great, clothes and shoes, fab! And it totally made me miss my girlfriends!
I must say I am a middle-class Charlotte with a splash of Miranda, as I am very focused when it comes to doing a lot of roles: daughter, girlfriend, worker, etc. I saw it opening night with a few girlfriends (and one husband haha) after dinner and drinks. Loved it! The closet, the plots, it was just great to see them all reunited again. I actually have and saw every episode at least 3 times. My sorority sisters and I had slumber parties watching the entire season while I was in college– good memories. Thanks for this post– it was fabulous! I plan to watch it again, and probably get the DVD. I also purchased the SATC: The Movie book and soundtrack!
i’m a samantha and carrie mix with a little bit of the charlotte nurturer in there. i’ve loved this show for so long!! i own all the seasons on dvd (not the box set) and it was some of the best money i ever spent! you definitely have to watch them on dvd, they edit out all the good stuff on tv
welcome to the fabulous world of SATC!!
just got back from seeing the movie with friends, i still can’t determine which character i am but the movie rocked, huston did a good job in her small role in such a big movie…farai chideya did an interview with funkybrownchick.com about the black woman’s version of sex in the city
Who’s huston? And what’s the black woman’s version?
*holding my tongue* [-SM]
Charlotte York Goldenblatt is my FAVORITE, but I probably identify with Carrie most.
I loved to movie. There were many surprises, HOT fashion, and a great story of love and friendship. I can’t wait to go back to see it. I sent my BFF a text - while crying, lol - about the scene where Carrie treks to Miranda’s in the snow to be with her New Year’s Eve. My BFF would totally do something like that for me. Another scene I loved is where Charlotte told BIG to back off after he humiliated her on her wedding day. I totally saw myself in Charlotte at that moment - I would absolutely step in and protect my friend from any pain. I thought that same scene was so profound and well done. I was SO pissed at BIG!
I honestly loved all the layers and thought it was really well done. I was concerned the movie wouldn’t live up to all the hype, but it most certainly did, and then some.
I think I’m a mixture of all of the women, but deep down, I’m actually a Charlotte. I never realized it though til recently. I can be a bit of a Miranda though. I have watched this show from the beginning and a faithful follower, I laughed out loud, cried (especially season 5). I loved the movie though, it was perfect and the characters are true to form.
I am a bit of all three wont give the % of each ;o) Sign up for Netflix or Blockbuster for the free trial and veg out over a weekend, rent all the seasons! I have been a fan of SATC from day one and have seen each episode at least 3x’s! Love the show
Word of warning, purchasing/borrowing a season of SATC takes over your life. You will not be able to do anything else until you have completed the season, and then you’ll have to get the next one and the vicious cycle starts over.
Also, it makes you over analyze everything in your past/present/future relationships.
And finally, if you haven’t seen the originals, do not watch a CW or TBS version. The edited version does not do the show justice, especially Samantha. They can hardly show her scenes, which are definately worth watching.
Enjoy.
I’m more like Samantha!
I don’t think no one in my circle is like Charlotte, they know better! LOL
I’m definitely Carrie! And yes, I have friends that are each character as well. The Carrie in me is the helpless romantic that seems to be able to give wonderful advice to readers and friends but has a much harder time using the same advice for myself…gotta love the helpless romantic! Just like Carrie, I too know that someday we all have the life that we desire…that is once we finally stop making it about everyone else and only about you and your partner.
The movie answered a lot of questions that an avid viewer might have had. For instance, during the series you never really know the age of any of the women. It’s like you just speculate that they’re “your age” because you can relate so much to what they are going through. I loved how the movie showed other groups of girlfriends going through the same things that the main characters had during their friendship. All in all the movie is choked full of wonderful lessons…LOVED every minute! My favorite scene was when Carrie beat BIG up with the wedding bouquet! The way her girls put the scowl on their faces to protect her! Couldn’t have written it better myself! That’s what your girls are for…I was brought to tears by the loyalty, the friendship, the bond - the same things that I see in the few loyal friends in my life…If only the series hadn’t ended.
I loved the movie - I cried all the way through it, but I’m a waterhead anyway. I think I’m a mixture of Charlotte and Samantha - seems weird but it’s true. When the series first came out I was Charlotte all the way but over the years a lot of my Samantha traits have surfaced. One of my BF’s went to see the movie before me and there were two things that reminded of me and they were Samantha and Charlotte scenes.
With the exception of Samantha’s sexual prowess, I have friends that represent each character.
LOVED IT!! I am a BIG fan of the show, have all the DVD’s, have seen them all more than once, cried at the final episode - more so that it was over rather than how it ended! You have to watch the DVD versions of the series, as it does lose something in the editing.
I have always thought of myself as a “Carrie”.
Can’t wait til this comes out on DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a certified SATC addict from the very beginning. I have been to NY to sit on Carrie’s steps, hang out at Manhlo Blanik’s, been to Charlotte’s art gallery and ate at TAO’s one of the show’s hot spot. Oh, and I have been to the church where Samantha met the “hot priest”.
My friends say I am 50% Carrie and 50% Samantha. As I get older I am turning more into Carrie(at least that is my opioin). When the season ended I had a HUGE SATC party complete with my own bartendar making Cosmos all night.
I loved it !!!! I cried and and laughed and let my heart break right along with Carrie’s. Having a BIG of my own in my life it gave me hope. I also loved the leason that at the end you have to be true to YOU!!!!
I cried.. I laughed - I cried…again -
It was really a great movie - I have seen all the episodes - I love SATC -
I don’t have a favorite character - b/c they all are apart of me -
