The Nerve!!

BabyGirl ordered a pizza last night. She told me the total was $12.87, so I wrote a check for an even $15.00. Half hour later, the pizza delivery guy knocks on the door. She opens it and takes the pizza, he takes the check. I hear the door close. Cool.
But a few seconds later, I hear someone knock again. By then, BabyGirl was already woofing down the pizza like I hadn’t fed her in ages, so I answered the door myself.
Pizza Guy: Hi ma’m, I just wanted to let you know that your check was only for $15.00.
Single Ma: Oh, did I make a mistake? How much was the pizza?
PG: It was $12.87.
SM: *blank stare*
PG: That leaves me with only $2 and change as a tip.
SM: *shifting stance to place hands on hip* And your point?
PG: I just figured you would give me at least $3.
SM: *head tilt with a raised eyebrow*
PG: Sorry to bother you ma’am.
SM: *closes the door*
Although I didn’t say what I was thinking, my facial expression spoke volumes. Had this been a teenager, I might would have felt bad and scraped some change from the bottom of my purse. But this was a grown ass man and it pissed me off!! Lucky he caught me on a good day. Hmph!

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Yea, I can’t believe he had the “balls” to do that! At a sushi place that shall remain nameless on Greenbelt Rd(LMAO), the waitress asked I and a friend that once. We had lunch at the sushi bar, tipped the guys that made our food, paid for our check(incl tip) and then proceeded to get ready to leave. The waitress comes over to retrieve our stuff and says(NO LIE): “Excuse me, but why didn’t you leave me more of a tip” (both our totals were $15.00…we each left $3.00) So I said….”um…that’s a 20% tip, what exactly were you looking for” and she said “Times are hard now..I have to feed my son” WTF!!! I had to literally drag my friend out of there, I could see the smoke coming out of her nose! People are starting to really get ballsy!
Yeah, he is lucky. I could see myself politely asking for the check back and writing up another check for the exact amount of the bill. Then, I would call the pizza place to inform them that their delivery person is harassing customers for a bigger tip, which is poor customer service at best and at worst could make someone choose another pizza place the next time.
Yeah, he is lucky and should count himself so.
If he didn’t come to his senses and walk away when he did, that’s exactly what I was going to do. [-SM]
WOW!!!
And don’t they charge a delivery fee? So you pay for the pizza, pay a delivery fee, AND your expected to give at least $3 in tip? Ri-darn-diculous!!
I would have taken the check back without a word. Wrote out another check for $12.87, handed it to him, and shut the door. Because the ish he just pulled just cost him his tip.
The nerve!!!
Woosaaaaa! (however you spell it)
Yes, the “delivery fee” was $1.50. I’ve always wondered what it was for. [-SM]
*Agreeing with Dimples* I was about to say the same thing. I know Papa John’s charges an additional $3.00 delivery fee that they sometimes don’t even tell you about. I opened my door one day and the delivery guy gave me the pizza with some inflated total. I asked him why was it so much and he said it was the delivery fee, I said OK and politely took away my $3.00 tip. At least inform the customers first.
I am surprised that the person was willing to knock on the door to ask - but I guess I’m awfully nice to our pizza delivery folk because less than $3 would be a pretty small tip. Perhaps if the pizza took a hundred years to show up, but by then I’m already on the phone with the place anyways. But I’ve always tipped pretty well, I guess, and now I’d be happy if someone would come and deliver me some good pizza — living in the boonies has it’s downsides. Oh, and I usually tip delivery people a set amount, regardless of the bill, and don’t do it based on the usual 15-20% - if you’re gonna drive the food to my house and get it to me still hot, I’m a happy woman.
In your case, I understand why you would tip more than 20%. I live in the middle of everything. I mean everything. There are at least 5 different pizza restaurants (mainstream and private) within a mile of my house. 15-20% is more than enough. [-SM]
You’re right, that took some kahunas to point out the size of the tip. Unless my math is bad, your tip was 16 1/2 %. Good enough in my book. If he’s that hung up on a larger tip for his deliveries, he should get a different job. And not being a complete tool would help some.
he was lucky to get a tip at all. he had some nerve. times are hard but he chose to deliver pizzas. i believe inside workers get at least minimum. hope he never has to deliver to your house again because if i were you i would not tip him !!!
LMAO ok that could only happen where you live. In my area if they get a tip they say WOO HOO. I guess your neighbors are big tippers.
Can you imagine him saying that and me getting my purse, him thinking its cause im looking for change and me pullin out stella?
After reading the part I highlighted in bold, you didn’t even have to say anymore. I knew what you were thinking. LOL!
And yes, I imagine my neighbors are big tippers. Fortunately, I don’t try to keep up with the Jones’ in that respect either. LOL Where I used to live, the pizza guy would consider himself lucky if he didn’t get jacked! [-SM]
Oh Lord. I can just see my husband (he is famous for this) giving someone the ‘tip’ of “Brother, let me explain something to you…” and going on from there!! But Single Ma, I’m curious–why would you have had more sympathy for the teenager than you did for the grown-azz man? (I assume you thought the man should have known better, while the teenager might not have had sense. Is that it?)
Short answer: simply because I hold adults to higher standards and expectations than I would a teenager.
Long answer: I would have given a teenager a pass for several reasons. The two that come to mind immediately are 1) it could have been his/her first job - or - 2) ALL deliveries may have given $3+ causing him/her to assume it was the norm. Therefore, I would have been more considerate of his/her perspective, but while scraping up extra change, he would received a verbal lesson from a mama. [-SM]
That was trifling. No manners whatsoever.
Unbelievable! If that happened to us, I would tell him what my daughter learned in preschool: “you get what you get and you don’t get upset.” ‘Nuf said.
That’s the upsell in his business. Good idea for him, I say. That would work a lot here. In the South, you would make people really uncomfortable and they would just give the money.
Perhaps that would have worked for YOU. I lived in the south for 8 years and my family would have called it at face value - RUDE. [-SM]
The delivery guy was out of line and his boss should be alerted to his rudeness.
I live in the South (born and raised) and being rude gets you nowhere….but cussed out. I have never experienced someone boldly contesting their tip. The first time I do, I will advise their employer. I tip well but I refuse to allow the tipee to tell me what I will or should tip. The tip is based on my determination of the service given.
Just make sure that you don’t order from that place again. Your pizza might come with a side order of a mysterious substance. If he had enough “Hutzpah” to knock on your door, then there is no telling what he will do next.
-MJL
I was thinking the same thing. LOL! [-SM]
He was out of the line, however ….(did you notice I did not say but?
)
Depending on where the pizza place is, if he had to drive it would be very generous of you to have given a bit more than $2. I mean, life in this country is definitely hard these days with gas prices and food prices etc that the difference between $2 and $3 does not really amount to much, for people who are in the service industry right now it is bad enough as it is
his situation might be such that he has to take that delivery job to make ends meet, maybe lost his job, maybe is going to school for career change, who knows
in his shoes one may feel the same way he did.
A tip is a courtesy, not a right and the term “generous” is subjective. In my opinion, my tip WAS generous because it was more than the standard 15%. Aside from that, the amount of a tip is at the discretion of the tipper and should be appreciated anyway.
While I understand your point, his reasons for delivering pizza is none of my concern and gas prices affect us all. I’m not in the business of saving every Jack & Jill who fall on hard times. Regardless of the circumstances, it’s the job he “chose” and no one should “expect” a larger tip if the one provided was already reasonable.
Further, it doesn’t matter to me WHERE the pizza place is located, although I already addressed this in a previous comment. The mere fact that they deliver to my house confirms that I’m within close proximity. [-SM]
ok, ok, ma
i know that i will not win the argument with you
you are way out of my league
No, you challenge me to think. I love your comments! [-SM]
Imagine if I worked for you?
You’d keep me on my toes. I like that in a person. [-SM]
Thanks, that was a great compliment!
LOL, I cannot believe dude had the nerve to do that. I would have taken the check and gave him the exact amount. Like you said, tipping is a courtesy and not a right. I would have definitely called his boss. Yeah, times are hard right now but that does not give him the right to ask you for additional money.
That’s absurdly rude. Did you call his store and report this to management?
No, I didn’t. I gave him a pass…but there may not be a next time. [-SM]
wow i’ve never had that happen to me. i cannot believe he had the nerve to do that. i wonder if he pulled that stunt thinking that your BG would open the door and he could intimidate a teenager into giving him more. You are nicer than me because I sure would have taken back my check. As for the “delivery fee” I asked my usual pizza place about it once and they said it’s to offset the increase in gas prices. Tipping is discretionary, not mandatory and if he thinks by asking for more of a tip he will get one he is obviously in the wrong industry. UGH.
hot boiling mess. he was a lucky dude.
That’s rude, most people do’nt tip at ALL. I wonder what he says to them. SMDH!
I am from the South also, and this is not acceptable anywhere! I would of wrote out a check for the exact amount and called management… as far as the comment that times are tough, yes they are for everyone. One of the main areas that people are cutting back is on eating out, so I am sure that they are feeling the hit, however all the more reason to give great service to ensure future business…
Interesting.
I’ve had a long debate with folks online about tipping once before, so I won’t go there today. I did want to mention a couple of points.
1) 15% as the “standard” tip is relatively new. I’m in my late 30s. 10 years ago, 10% was a “baseline” tip and it went up from there. Pull out your old tip card. Now folks are trying to push it to 20%. Whatever
2) Tips = gratuity There are not required. There is no entitlement. If you work in a job where you receive tips, that is your choice. I am not required to supplement anyones income. No one supplements my income. I wish I could tell my boss that I need a 15-20% bump in income because of my increased expenses.
I tend to be very generous with tips unless the service is poor. But the entitlement attitude really works my nerves.
Very interesting that he had the nerve to knock on your door to ask you about a tip. I think I would still complain to the manager and find a new pizza delivery place.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!
He had the NERVE to come back and knock on the door? You know that is PURE comedy right there.
He wrong for that! LOL
This economy must be hitting real hard if pizza delivery dudes are getting up the nerve to GO BACK to a house and comment on their tips! First of all, 20% is standard tip so on $12.87, $2 and change is JUST RIGHT!
What a punk!
I am still more bothered by the fact that you pay a delivery charge. Who gets that money, does it go to the driver, or to the company?
Kind of like when a restaurant adds on gratuity, then I pay exactly what they have listed, where as I usually tip at least 20% or so.
I dunno. I give the guy some props for having the chutzpah to come back and ask. It’s not like he loses anything with you saying no, and he would gain something if you gave him another buck. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Only if you consider an unhappy customer nothing “lost” - all about perspective I suppose. [-SM]
My conern that has not been mentioned is, I would not trust a delivery man with my personal check. As revenge for your “lousy” tip, he could very easily write down your account and routing number and use it to pay friends phone bills, anything that takes a check over the phone. This would not get traced back to him and would cause you the hassle of filling out fraud forms at your bank, closing your accounts and so on… I have had this happen to me, with an employee’s paycheck, he used our business account from his paycheck to pay multiple bills and there was no way for me to pin it on him.
Never thought about that, thanks for the warning! As a PF junkie, I check my acct so much throughout the day, I’d notice foul play almost immediately. [-SM]
Try to pay as much in cash as possible and as little by check as possible
or better yet, I pay with credit card as much as I can even for the tiniest purchases so that if I am not happy I can either get refund/credit or file for dispute
most of the small and even large merchants do not want to waste their time on dealing with legalities of disputes so it is easier for them to refund your money than go through your CC’s dispute department and its paperwork
I seriously just had the EXACT same thing happen to me. The delivery guy was complaining about how people on my campus don’t tip and then proceeded to tell me that I didn’t give him much of one either.
maybe he wanted more for gas !!! LOL
The delivery charge goes to the company and not the driver. I run a pizza place and I agree that is just RUDE!
@Katy, What is the delivery charge designed to cover, if it goes to the company? I don’t get it? It seems to me the delivery charge at a company would be for gas and car costs.
omg that is so rude. Manners, people!
It’s interesting reading/seeing this because in australia we don’t really have the pressure to ‘tip’, it’s not expected. And even if it was, MANNERS.
what the heck happened to manners? that is just rude! And i too would have taken the check back and given him the exact amount. Sheesh!
