Dominican Hair Salons in the DC Metro Area

My Goodness! I never thought it would be so hard to find a Dominican salon in the DC area. When I lived in Jerzee, there was one on almost every corner. A wash & set for $20? That’s the bizness! They operate like an assembly line – a different person to wash/condition, set, and style – in and out 1-2 hours tops. Yep, just what I needed! Then I moved south…

Say “doobie wrap” and people would look at me like I had 3 heads. LOL Whatev. After years of getting the gas face, the Dominican salon became a fading memory. But after moving back towards the Mason Dixon line, I was hoping to rekindle the old flame. I searched, and I searched, and I searched…defeated. So I continued to suffer through 4 hour salon visits at $45+ a pop. *sigh* Then it dawned on me. Man, this is DC! There MUST be at least ONE Dominican salon around here…somewhere! Ok, it didn’t really “dawn” on me. I just became desperate. LOL

Due to limited funds, I was determined to find one. I needed an interim solution for my overgrown roots and didn’t have a lot of money to spend. So I hopped on google search and began pestering BK Diva and Ginger first thing this morning. LOL Their recommendations gave me a starting point, and eventually, I found a Dominican salon to tame my tresses. Yay!

I went to Judith Dominican Style in Adams Morgan (NW DC), and just as expected, I was in/out in less than 2 hours. Half the time was sitting under a dryer – that DS heat is a BEAST. My tresses can’t stand the constant heat, but it’s all good for an occasional visit because the results are fabulous. A head full of soft, straight hair with LOTS of body and shine. Just the way I like it! :-D

Now you know I luv y’all like play cuzzins, so I won’t make you go through the same turmoil of finding a Dominican salon. For all of you fabulous ladies who prefer the infamous DS blow out, here’s a list of local Dominican salons in the DC area:

As you can see, competition in DC is scarce so the prices are a little higher than what you’ll find in NY/NJ. That’s too bad because price, in addition to speed and results, is the biggest attraction to a Dominican salon. But oh well, as long as the price isn’t too steep, the speed and results are still worth it to me.

If you know of any more Dominican salons in the DC area, please feel free to list them in the comments. For those who live outside the DC area, this database, Round Brush Hair, may also be helpful. Just put in your zip code to get a list of all the Dominican salons in your area.

Keep your tresses fab!

**This is the only DS that I’ve visited in the DC area and the only one I can vouch for personally. The owner, Judith, did my hair and it turned out fab.

Thanks for the information….several people have recommended I try having visiting a Dominic salon, but I haven’t had a chance……now I really have no excuse since you’ve provided more than enough resources for me to check out…..

What is a Dominican salon? Sorry, I’m an Asian from Hawaii…

A Dominican salon is a hair salon that’s owned/operated by natives of the DR. However, more important than their ethnic background is their styling technique, which uses a combination of extreme heat and a round brush to “blow out” the hair until it is bone straight. Some say the heat is too harsh for long term care, but the results are fabulous. Long, silky tresses with lots of body and shine. You’d be amazed at what they can do with ANY texture of hair so they often attract patrons from all walks of life – including European and Asian.

They are also known for the speed and efficiency of their operations, which run like an assembly line. You get a wash/condition by one person, roller set by another, then blow/style by another. It’s a quick and seamless process. What’s fascinating to me is that there’s very little communication (they primarily speak Spanish so I can’t understand them anyway) and minimal idle time (sitting/waiting) wasted. A typical visit to an AA salon requires half a day, but in my experience, a visit to a DS is 2 hours max.

Another attraction to a DS, if not the biggest, is price. In the north, a DS blow out can cost anywhere from $10 to $15 plus an additional $10 for length beyond the shoulders. Compared to the typical AA salon, this is a savings of $20 or more. Here in DC, the price is about the same, but the speed and results still have an advantage.

So if you consider the cost savings, time, and results – a Dominican salon is a dream come true for most women. I still visit AA salons for haircare (i.e. relaxers, trims, layers, special conditioning treatments, hi-lites, etc.), but the DS results provide a daily low maintenance style. [-SM]

Thanks for the list. I use to go to Claudia’s before I chopped off my hair. I absolutely LOVED it. On Saturday’s the spot is PACKED to compacity with ladies…especially Howard students. And you’re right…in and out in 1.5 hours TOPS. If you’re looking for a place in MD, I would definitely suggest them.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAA as I started reading your post, I was thinking to myself “Judiths” and then lo and behold…that’s the one you were talkin about! I agree…Judith’s is the bomb! When I was @ HU, I stayed in Adams Morgan getting my fresh “blow out” from the Dominicans.

    5. nofearingthemoney, 18 May 2008, 9:51

I have some NYC friends who swear by the Dominican salons. Some have even been known to go to the outer boroughs on the rumor of a better spot…so they must be good. I have no personal experience, so I can’t recommend any in my area.

This post did make me calculate how long it has been since I stepped into a salon to get my hair done…14 years! Dayum, I’m cheap and lazy when it comes to my hair! lol

    6. MsLindiwe, 18 May 2008, 10:27

      Hey Single Ma,
Having lived in Jersey for about 4 years now, I’ve seen the Dominican salons–I spent my first year in Newark, and it was common to see sisters rocking their doobies on Friday day, getting ready to go out Friday night!

Anyway, I generally do my own unpermed hair in twists and twist-outs, cuz it simply costs too much dough to get these services done professionally. Like nofearing, I can’t tell you the last time I was in a salon. My question is, though, in your experience, will the Dominicans whip that infamous blowout on unpermed hair? Dare I set foot in a Dominican salon with my thick natural mop?

    7. call2arms, 18 May 2008, 11:56

Ethiopian/Erytrian (sp) salons have a very similiar process and same result with none of that blow out heat. The West Coast Dominican salons are about $60. The Ethiopian salon about $30- I think they may actually be faster. It’s amazing what your hair looks like when they are done.

MsLindiwe, I have unpermed hair and the Dominican Salons can handle it. The Dominicans have hair of great variety from straight to super kinky.

    8. Debt Hater, 18 May 2008, 12:12

I’ve heard all about the Dominicans’ ability to do hair, but what about those of us that are au naturale? Can they work magic with kinky locks?

    9. Single Income No Kids, 18 May 2008, 14:04

Single Ma, I subscribed to your blog feed when you only had 250 readers and I’ve been an avid reader since that time. Ironically I was in a New Jersey DS just yesterday and I’m loving my round-brushed, silky hair. There is a new salon within three blocks of my house. As you mentioned, they are very efficient with their assembly line. It just amazes me that I can get a doobie for $10 and a blowout for $5 more. With these prices and efficiency, why would anyone wash their own hair?

    10. Single Income No Kids, 18 May 2008, 14:15

MsLindiwe, I only perm my hair 2-3 times a year. So I am very close to being natural. My hair is naturally curly. After sitting under the dryer with a roller set for an hour, it’s straight. However, lately, I’ve been wearing my hair straight so I’ve been asking them to blow it out using their round brush technique. While the heat is not great for your hair, the heat combined with a round brush and the Dominicans technique can make your hair bounce and behave. Try it, you will not be disappointed.

Like Deena above, I have to ask what a Dominican salon is. I’m assuming it’s a salon run by beauticians from the Dominican Republic, but if not, please advise. (A short explanation on the difference between a Dominican salon and any other salon would be helpful.) I’m a woman of color from the Caribbean but I have hair that I can just wash ‘n go. It’s naturally curly or I can blow it dry straight, either way with no chemicals or processes needed. My daughter, on the other hand, has hair more like her African American father and I can barely manage it. (However, she is only 4, so I’m hesitant to use any chemicals on her.) I’m going to have to find a good stylist for children’s hair and will probably pay dearly, but she undoubtedly will need some sort of perm or relaxer to tame her long but kinky, thick head of hair. So suggestions for that would be helpful, too. Thanks!

    12. AHS, 18 May 2008, 19:50

I love going to the Dominican Salon. The one by me is very cheap, but I still try not to go too often because the high amounts of heat used can be damaging to your hair.

    13. BK, 18 May 2008, 20:18

@DH.. they will WORK your natural ma.. Ginger is Natural too and I’ve seen her BONE straight!! LOL I can’t vouch for any of these spots except for Luisa’s.. when I first moved here I went but damn if I wasn’t mad at paying $35-40 for my doobie!!!

When I first moved after my experience with Luisa’s I did my own for a min.. and rocked my pins.. *remember that ma* LOL the pins.. and not take it down LOL until ready to go out!!!! I remember the DS spot I used to go back in BK.. spot on Flatbush and Lincoln Rd.. LOL right at the corner.. the best doobie for $10 and used to get a $5 doobie if I went on Tuesday!!! when in HS that was the ish!!!!

Hmmm wondering if I need to holla at the mami’s up top and convince them to move here and open up a damn franchise.. HMMMM Ok let me get out your comments!

    14. Sistah Ant, 19 May 2008, 9:57

Yes, ladies, if you have no relaxer in your hair, you can still go to the DS and they will blow your hair out too – in fact some women purposely go without the chemical and rely on the DS instead, depending on their level of comfort with the technique (which uses a lot of heat) and the results, which vary according to the texture of your hair.

I don’t have a relaxer. I’ve gone a few times. Loved the price and the results. Didn’t like all that heat (I’m a punk) and didn’t love how crowded they were – the place I was going to was just too popular and the wait was a mess. Besides, I can still achieve the same results at home in the same amount of time, probably because my hair and Legal Editor’s hair are alike. I’ve been wash-and-wearing more often.

    15. y, 19 May 2008, 10:22

Dominican Salons in DC are not cheap, I pay 80 for a relaxer. (so I can’t afford to go often) I’ve been to both Judith’s and Claudia’s in Silver Spring and I’ve been pleased with both. Those blow dryers are no joke, though-I cringe everytime. I’m relaxed but I do know people with natural kinky hair who go there get their hair straightened. I generally do not like salons, period but I love the dominican salons, they are one reason why I miss living in the DC area.

    16. twin, 19 May 2008, 11:37

back towards the Mason Dixon line…………..LOL

There are a few here in ATL, I’ve never been, but now you give me something to think about

    17. tiredofbeingbroke, 19 May 2008, 18:12

I go to the Dominicans to get my hair done here in the BX. However, I do not mess with the blow out. No way, Jose. LOL That heat is rediculous. I just get it wrapped or have the bouncing curls. Am too much of a punk.

The salon I go to will work with natural hair. I’ve seen the owner do the conditioner and blow out. A relaxer is $45 and the deep conditioner is $25 where I go.There are place you can get it cheaper on Monday and Tuesday.

    18. tiredofbeingbroke, 19 May 2008, 18:15

Legal editor you are correct. The salons are run by Domincans. I would get a recommendation for one in your area and try it out. They would definitely be able to work with both you and your daughter’s hair.

    19. Dimples, 19 May 2008, 19:44

Thanks for the info SM! I don’t know if you can answers these questions but here they are:

If multiple people do your hair, who exactly do you tip?

Is there a limit on the number of times you can get a blow out? Meaning, for the sake of my hair’s health should I limit the blow outs to once a month?

Hope you can help. I just found a DS here in Orlando using the search site. Might hit them up this weekend.

    20. Legal Editor Mom, 19 May 2008, 22:58

      Tired,
Thanks for the tip. While my daughter’s hair is definitely my priority, I just love having my hair shampooed and blow dryed by someone else!
      LEM

    21. BlessedDiva, 20 May 2008, 23:12

Single Ma, that is the TRUTH. I MISS my DS. I’m a Harlem native, now I’m in Charleston, SC. ***secretly thinking about starting an underground railroad to brind DS to Chucktown! LOL*** They don’t even know what a doobie IS where I live.

    22. Tamz, 5 June 2008, 10:44

      Dimples,

I have only been to a DS twice. i am from DC and go to Sashelvis in Silver Spring…I asked the stylist this question and she said about every two weeks would be ok…..I waited 2 months between my blowouts though….anywhere between once or twice a month shoudl be reasonable….it is up to you and what you think your hair can handle. I am natural but I still don’t like putting a lot of heat on my hair as it is very soft and breaks easily. As for the tipping, I have seen ppl give just the blow dryer/stylist and the roller setters tips of maybe $5-$10, usually after their hair is completely finished and they are on their way out the salon…Hope that helps!

    23. Susan Borders, 10 June 2008, 9:37

Help- I live in North Carolina, never had the Dominican experience, but have seen. My neice’s hair is beautiful and manageable- and perm free! How can I find one of these solons in my area?

    27. natural curls, 7 July 2008, 15:08

Hey! This is natural curls. Thx for the 411. I had my first visit as a spectator in a NY Dominican salon. I came with someone who knows the stylist who works in one {can’t remember name}. Later, by another person, I was told to try a Dominican hair care stylist since I’m natural. I have been in search since then and no luck…until this search. Getting your info is confirmation. Now, I need to select from your list. Thx for making it easier.

      sign off…naturale curls

    28. Nee, 7 July 2008, 16:24

I have the curly au natural and every time i visit my black beautician she wants to put a perm in my hair so that my wrap can hold and stay without the curls setting in. So I started going to Top Dominican Hair Salon in Pikesville, MD and I LOVE it. They deep conditioned my hair, blow it out and my hair is str8 with bounce and shine for a whole two weeks even with the summer heat and humidity in bmore. I love my experience thus far and once I get my hair done I don’t have to put heat to my hair again, which is an added plus. Now I’m not sure about any coloring or cutting, I think I’ll still go to my lovely black beautician for that :).

    29. lady, 18 July 2008, 13:25

Nee-Do you know the name of the beautician that did your hair at Top Dominican Salon (in Pikesville, MD). I have never been there before but I might go next week.

    30. georgiagirl, 19 July 2008, 16:11

I am so happy to have found this site!! I have narrowed my choices down to claudia’s and judith’s. I am very particular, and typically hate going to hair salons, but my hair looks a mess. So i need to go! The question is, which one? any advice sould be greatly appreciated!! Also, has anyone gotten a relaxer from one of the DR places? Thanks!!!!

    31. SAJW, 23 July 2008, 15:05

Beware the heat from the dryer feels like you scalp is cooking. If you have a sensitive scalp stay away from the blow out. You will regret it.

    32. DK, 30 July 2008, 11:03

Try Visions in Adams Morgan! The owner and stylists are all good, professional and courteous. I’m happy with the results on my unprocessed hair. My hair is naturally wavy, so it doesn’t require much heat to get it bone straight, but I’ve seen all different textures coming away looking straight, bouncy, and shiny. If you live in the DC area, Visions is a ‘must try’. I am positive that you’ll be happy and become a regular just like I did. (I travel from NoVA to DC to get to Visions. I put up with the inconvenience of traveling there because I LOVE it!)

I haven’t tried Lucy’s but I’ve considered it since it would be much closer. Any word on Lucy’s in VA?

    33. Ty, 9 August 2008, 17:19

I go to Giovonni’s in Adams Morgan…… and I love it… most of the time me and my bestfriend go together…. when you make an appointment the styist really get to know you… Sondra is ours she even came in on her day off for us….. my hair used to be VERY thin until I started using the conditioners ect..

    34. Dee Archer, 30 August 2008, 19:53

Looking for someone who has used New Look Bodifier as a texturizer or relaxer. I know someone close to me whose had all her hair fall out within about 3 months. Looking for someone who has had a similar experience or if you know of someone who had the same experience, please post and let me know.

    35. ShanteDess, 2 September 2008, 12:46

Can anyone recommend a particular stylist at Judith’s?

And Lucy’s is right down the street from my house, any word on how that is?

    36. TeeTee, 3 September 2008, 7:15

Good luck !! AND FAR AS LUCY ‘ S I REALLY DONT KNOW I LIVE DOWN THE STREET FROM HER TOO BUT I JUST CANT SEEM TO GET INFO ON HER SKILZ

    37. ShanteDess, 3 September 2008, 20:04

Thanks Tee Tee. I checked around on Lucy yesterday and word is that she uses good products and works best with long hair. Other than that I guess the only way to tell is to go see whats shes got.

    38. ShanteDess, 3 September 2008, 20:04

Thanks Tee Tee, ill go give francine a try! checked around on Lucy yesterday and word is that she uses good products and works best with long hair. Other than that I guess the only way to tell is to go see whats shes got.

    39. TD, 4 September 2008, 23:20

You can also try Leiky at Judith’s. She gives a mean blowout. Although, it depends on what you want. If it’s color, Judith is your gal. Overall they work as a team, so I’m sure you’ll be fine. Good luck.

I’m am advocate of outsourcing as much as possible, including my hair care. But I’m curious whether any of you visited http://www.HealthyTextures.com? I’ve watched this blog develop in the last year to include thousands of readers. The blog advocates a Do-It-Yourself approach to healthier hair. She has dozens of articles and mini video tutorials on healthy hair care and styling. Among other things, she shows you how to rollerset your own hair, if you are so inclined. She has also developed a community at http://www.HealthyTextures.ning.com. With over 6,000 members, I suppose our hair is the one thing we are truly passionate about regardless of whether it’s permed, texturized or natural. There is also a natural hair community founded by a former business colleague of mine which can be found at http://www.NaturalSuccess.ning.com. Actually, she links back to Single Ma.

    45. Nikki, 19 October 2008, 14:47

If your’re transitioning or natural Lucy’s in VA is NOT the place for you. She complained the while time while combing out my very tangled hair & she kept saying if I don’t get a perm, my hair will fall out. I will never go to her again! I’ve tried Judith’s in Adam’s Morgan & they don’t seem to mind natural hair. Both Sondra & Judith have done my hair & they both did a great job.

THEM HOWARD U CHICKS NEED TO STOP THE MADDNESS WITH THAT NATURAL SHIT I MEAN WHY GO NATURAL IF UR GONNA TUNR AROUND AND TRY TO GET IT STRAIGHT I MEAN IF SOME OF THESE GIRLS NEED SUPER STRENGTH RELAXERS IN THARE HAIR BUT THEY CHOOSE NOT USE RELAXER? TAKEN BY THE FACT THAT WHEN THE STYLIST IN DONE FOR THE MOST PART THE CLIENT LOOKS UPSET IT ALMOST SEEMS AS THOUGH THE CLIENTS WITH NATURAL HAIR IS ALWAYS!! EXPECTING TO GET UP FROM THE CHAIR WITH THE RELAXER LOOK . CRAZY!!!!!!!! SORRY UM JUST SAYING

    47. Nikki, 22 October 2008, 9:31

@ really…I didn’t go to Howard but I will speak on this. Have you ever thought that most people go natural b/c its healthier for the hair? There is absolutely nothing wrong with for wahtever someone chooses to do with their hair. My problem is with stylist who are unprofessional about it. In my situation if she didn’t want to work on natural hair, that’s her right. But don’t say you’re going to do my hair then complain the whole damn time about it. There are stylist ouit there who are willing without all the noise.

OMG! Finally! Im from Elizabeth, Nj and now I live in Landover,MD. I went into a shop and asked for a Doobie and got crazy looks. All the info you girlies are giving is great. The one question that I do have that I havent stumbled up on is does any of these shops wrap your hair with pins like back in Jersey? I personally cant stand the HEAT!!!!

    49. Gloria, 1 November 2008, 23:25

I went to the shop in Landover, MD today. Sinita’s hair salon. They were busy as hell. However, they did rock the doobie for me. My hair is cut in a bob right below the ear lobe. Yes they did the wonderful doobie. $80 for touch up.

    54. kim, 19 November 2008, 20:36

I went to Sintia today and it looked like Silver Spring up in there. I recognized stylist who used to work in Silver Spring Dominican hair salons. Merrigold was my regular stylist when I used to track up to the tip of Silver Spring every other week. Now, I can go half way and meet her. (LOL). Sintia is certainly working on becoming the BEST Dominican Salon in the DMV. (LOL) I have also gone to Star Dominican Salon in District Heights. There is only 1 Dominican in there who can half way do hair. They need to go to Silver Spring and recruit some talet. (LOL)

@ty I would suggest going to judith’s they are right down the street from them tricklet’s at gio’s I get my hair done by Leaky at judith’s salon she is really good and not mention dont sleep on that sister Francine she dose a great job as well. But the only thing I dont like about judith’s is that you end up spending a lot off time in the salon. But anyway far as giovonni , let me just said this I come from a multi racial back ground IAM black all the way live LOL!! BUT iam african american ,west indian and irish so i have very thick hair it very hard for my hair to fall out even if I were to perm my hair death it would take some time to fall out . let me put it like this Gio’s made it fall out LOL!!!

    56. Tif j snow, 21 November 2008, 9:19

Back@Ty sorry my boss walked in but any way go to Judith’s and try Leaky or Francine it seems a though The two of them really got skills leaky is blow out Queen, Francine she is more in to growth and heathy hair Judy is the bomb to but she has to many regular clients . oh yeah before i forget I cant seem to remember the stylist name but she is very young with a light complexion with wavy hair normally worn pulled back in a ponytail well …. I hate to be so damm mean but stay away from her she will burn the devil out of your scalp and when your all done she will leave you hair looking like a extra straight brids nest.LOL!!

I moved from MD to VA and I have been going to Odalis in Gaithersburg for a few years and I was extremely happy. I am now going to Lucy’s in Arlington and I am very happy with her services. I have naturally curly hair that blows straight pretty easily and I get it cut about every 8 weeks. Her prices are very reasonable, too

    59. Lisa, 23 February 2009, 13:26

Baltimore locations? Anyone know of any?

    60. Laura, 26 February 2009, 14:20

It’s been awhile since this was posted, so does anyone know if Lucy’s in Arlington is still open? Their website doesn’t work… And how much do they charge for a shampoo/blowout?

    61. kay, 3 March 2009, 12:12

lucy’s is still open but…beware…just dont get a relaxer :)

    62. Cynthia Green, 5 March 2009, 10:20

Recently my hair has been thinning on the top, I have tried many different products including a dermatologist who treated my problem for eight weeks. It is still thin on the top. I tried a dominican salon for the deep conditioner which I was really happy with, the woman who styled my hair suggested that I get a protein treatment the next time, I haven’t been back since, but does anyone know if it is a good idea to continue going to a DS for the treatments and deep conditioners?

      **Thursday Special: Wash/Set $25****

I’m a licensed cosmetologist, specializing in African-American hair. I learned how to do the round brush in hair school, but never perfected the skill. After hearing so many of my African-American friends talk about the Dominican hair salons and their round brushing, I had to try it for myself. I was very pleased. It’s true; you’re in and out. I was probably there 1hr and a half. I got a wash/set,blow-out, and a trim. It doesn’t take a lot for my hair to get straight, and I have a relaxer, but it turned out good and it’s still straight and silky. They can round brush some natural hair! Those girls looked like they got a press.I just wrap my hair at night. They do somethings differently from African-American hair salons such as putting shampoo on the hair first instead of rinsing the hair first, and they don’t use any much products as us; they just use the gloss oil spray, and that’s at the end of the service. It has been 1 week since my first service. I can go another week, but I’m going back and of course on Thursday so I can get that $25 Special! I’m going to buy me another blow-dryer and round brush. The only thing is that I won’t go all the time, maybe twice a month just because that’s a lot of heat. Here’s a little tip, you can achieve the same silky straight hair but w/o all the heat by setting the hair, wrap it after it has dried, and sit back under the dryer for 5-10 min.; the longer you stay under the straighter it’ll get.

    64. Tricia, 26 March 2009, 19:38

So which dominican salons in MD/DC are the best for straightening natural kinky hair and who exactly shoud you ask to do your hair?

    65. Ebby, 9 April 2009, 9:36

I was just informed that Leaky no longer works at Judith ‘ s anymore dose anyone no if she has moved to another salon ? and whare can she be found.

    66. Antoinette, 15 April 2009, 10:07

There is a salon in Alexandria, Special Touch, on North Beauregard St. I believe they are dominican as well and they do a really good job. The owner is really good and there is an older woman with glasses and shoulder length hair that is pretty good too. The only thing I don’t like is they use a flat iron after the blow out. Most times, I just tell her the roots only and go about my business.

    67. Felicia, 23 April 2009, 6:08

Have been to Sintia’s Salon in Landover several times. They did a pretty good job however, after taking my daughter (she is natural) I was very disappointed. Her hair looked good but after we got home we noticed it was broken off very bad in three different locations. My sister and girlfriend also had the same experience. I do not plan on going back to that salon. I have been to Judith’s in D.C.and although the wait is a little longer, I was much happier.

    68. Anissa, 24 April 2009, 11:40

Has anyone tried the Dominican salon on Marlboro Pike in District Heights, MD the name of it is Star Dominican Hair?

    69. Miss Bradley, 29 April 2009, 10:59

Because of the amount of heat they put on your hair, how often do you recommend visiting Dominican salons? I haven’t tried one yet but have an appointment @ Judith’s next week. Wish me luck!! ;-)

    70. Melissa Gray, 4 May 2009, 15:11

There is one more that I’d recommend in Adam’s Morgan and that is Giovanni’s. Although I hate those small old fashioned dryers that you sit under (I prefer the really hot high powered ones) I love the way the women in the first two seats do hair. I often find that at Judith’s they don’t straighten my hair well enough at the roots but that’s because I like it SUPER straight at the roots, allows me to go longer without a relaxer and still look good. My all time favorite is Luisa’s in Silver Spring. I live in DC but go there EVERY week because Druselda can hook it up. My hair is permed and colored and somewhat fine but still manages to take the heat without breaking. Not cheap though $40 for wash and set. Not like NY where I’m from.

    71. Kaye, 14 May 2009, 15:05

thanks for the great tips! I just moved from Atlanta and am looking for a touch and go concept salon in the NOVA area? After a roller set, you take the rollers out and style yourself. Much cheaper prices… perm, trim and color on edges cost about $50.

please respond if you’ve found this concept in this area.
      thanks!

    72. Katrina, 23 May 2009, 12:54

Thank you for this posting. Like the rest, my hats are off to Dominican Stylists. Yet, I wanted to ask you about special accommodations for women like me. I cover my hair for religious reasons, but I like my hair to be healthy and look nice, too. Can you tell me if any of the salons above have set-ups where I could get my hair cut and styled in privacy (without men around or windows)?

    73. Shells, 26 May 2009, 16:54

My boyfriend lives in DC and I went to visit him…Based on this blog, I went to Judiths. They are ok but Im comparing them to a place I lived a while back with a lot of Dominicans. There is no one named Francine there…at least not when I asked. Im trying Claudia’s next time. Judith’s was average with the blow out method. Your hair will be straight but not in a major way or anything…I used to be able to sleep without wrapping my hair and it was all flowy and blowing in the wind like what the media markets to us as hot. They can do a blow out. It’s not superb but it is a blowout nonetheless. I give them a 7.

No time to moderate this old post anymore. I will leave it up as a reference for those looking for DS in the DC metro area, but comments are now closed.
