Contrasting Farewells
My staff is planning my farewell party. The invitation went out today, a whole week and a half before my departure date. The people in charge said they wanted to make sure everyone had sufficient notice so they can plan to attend. Aww. And the best part about it. They’re planning a farewell BRUNCH. A catered event that is expected to last from 9:30am to 12:30pm. All friggin morning! Wow! I guess I can look at this in one of two ways…
1 - Single Ma is so valued around here, EVERYONE would like to bid her farewell, so let’s keep the schedule open-ended for maximum participation.
- or -
2 - Ding! Dong! The witch is FINALLY leaving, so let’s have an all day CE-LE-BRA-TION! LOL!
Either way, I eagerly await the next chapter of my career.
*thinking*
Just last year, on 29 March 2007, I reported to you all that I got the job. I thought it was the job of my dreams. A promotion, more money, more responsibility, more authority, and a coveted title.
Then, the saddest day of my career arrived. 27 April 2007 was my very last day working for an employer that taught me everything I know about my career field in 5.5 years. I will always value and respect my colleagues and may even return after BabyGirl leaves for college. Remember, I left the job because I moved for a better school system.
Anyhoo, a room full of people (from maintenance to executive level), some who had to stand because enough seats weren’t available, took the time out of their busy workday to send me off with a bang. And it was a bitter sweet moment. I cried. Wiggedy whack, I know. LOL
Now almost one year later, my last day at my current employer will be 25 April 2008. Actually, 22 April will be my last day IN the office - using their dime to take another leadership course before I go. LOL I have no idea who will be in attendance at this farewell because I haven’t been around long enough to make a significant impact. But again, they’re planning to send me off with a bang. Unfortunately, this departure won’t be bitter sweet. Only sweet.
Even without another job! LOL

It’s better that they are having the party before you leave rather than after. Enjoy it.
Take it as a compliment and enjoy the brunch!
I’m with Chele - they could have a had a “don’t let the door hit you on the way out party”
Enjoy the brunch - you deserve it!
I think they’re doing it for morale. A way to tell the leftover employees, “we value you!”
