Temptation

I’ve seen more in the past 11 months than I ever have in my entire career. I’m getting first hand experience of the varying dynamics and political pressures between a structured, well respected, superior organization (i.e. my previous employer) and an established, yet evolving, organization with a poor industry reputation, constant turnover, and inexperienced leadership. The past year has been priceless and I will have many lessons learned when I depart; however, I am amazed at the temptations that are presented to me almost daily. Just to name a few:

  • Two of the four leadership classes that I wanted to attend were previously rejected due to “limited funds” but now have been – miraculously - approved.
  • End of year performance evals are coming up this month and I heard through the corporate grapevine that I may get another nice surprise. Despite clearly expressing my desire to leave, I wasn’t expecting anything, but I’ll take it.
  • A manager resigned last month and he had a HUGE office that everyone jokingly referred to as the Ivory Towers. After attending offsite meetings two days in a row, I returned yesterday to an empty office. For a minute, I thought I was being fired - impossible, but a funny thought. LOL I was kinda looking forward to a nice, long vacation. I’d already removed my personal effects anyway - I’m mentally gone - but I found that all of my files had been moved to the Towers. Hmm, ok.
  • Nice right? Well, I later learned that I will also inherit ALL of his previous assignments and entire staff (read: more work and more people to be responsible for). *gag*
  • Late yesterday, I received a phone call to discuss “the changes” and I was asked to consider the possible idea (read: incentive) of “permanently” telecommuting 2 days/week. Nice dangling carrot.

As I entered my new office this morning, I spent a few moments taking in the scenery: the reclining leather chair, the “L” shaped maple desk and matching bookcases, the huge windows that span about 2/3 of the wall height, the round maple visitor table and soft chairs, the armoire to hang my coat, and my name on the door - I’m not quite sure what to make of this. My rebellious desire to go against the grain and shake up status quo, which I hope will bring about change for the greater good, is surprisingly working in my favor. I was willing to take one for the team, so the response isn’t at all what I expected. I’m sure these changes could potentially benefit my career, but it’s a good thing I’m not an indecisive person. Otherwise, I would respond to the temptation and make a bad decision again. Fool me once…

I just got five words to say… UN BULL LEAVE A BULL!

They are trying their damnedest to keep you, but as you stressed before…accepting a counter offer is a BAD idea…because it’s just a bandaid to a gaping wound that will eventually fester at you again.

So we want you to stay fabulous! You need to move on.

But it IS nice knowing you are considered a valuable commodity!

Danger, Will Robinson, Danger! Sometimes you just have to say, ‘Let that be a lesson to you.’ and walk away.

Fool you once, indeed. Nice, but too late. Put your feet up though and get the feel, for your next job:–).

Dammmn Single Ma, That is one righteous office. It’s nice being in the position that you don’t have to “settle” for something that on the surface looks great. When you know in your heart that it’s broken. I’ve had a FABULOUS time reading your post. Keep em coming.

Wow! That’s something. Have been reading your posts for a minute and am loving it. I have a question to ask you and hope others will chime in.

I am very unhappy at my job and am wanting to leave. I’m not a supervisor or anything like that. Just a lowly cog in the wheel. What are cons (if any) of letting folks know you want to leave? Are there any pros? If a counter offer was made, I’d still blow that pop stand!

Interesting… It’s like you have to keep it going on the one hand and keep your eyes roaming on the other…
