Reason No. 10,001 - Why I Hate Riding the Metro (and tidbits from my leadership class)

MOTION SICKNESS

I feel so “blah” right now. My stomach is turning. My head feels woozy. Everything looks squiggly. I had to open all the windows in my house to get fresh air. And I feel like I need to vomit.

Sorry TMI.

I hate hate hate the metro!!!

I’d rather drive in bumper to bumper traffic than ride the metro.

I miss my car, but I have one more day in this class.

Thank gawd!!

When it’s over, I’ll have some good material to share about being a Professional Woman. The topics I plan to blog about will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Establishing your professional image
  • Reinventing yourself
  • Finding/being a mentor
  • How to be successful in a male dominated career field/work place
  • Understanding the differences between men vs. women communication
  • Understanding the differences between male vs. female leadership styles
  • Learning to manage men in the workplace
  • How and when to be assertive (appropriately)
  • Book and video recommendations

Depending on what bombards me when I return to the office on Thursday, I will try to crank out a post or two on the leadership topics this week. Until then, I just need to survive one more day on that crappy, stinky metro. Lawd, I need a Dramamine!

Learning to manage men in the workplace — Oh my goodness, that’s actually a topic? Wow! LOL
I would like to hear about that.

Yes, but it’s not in a “let’s boss them around” kind of way. LOL It’s more about understanding their communication style and adjusting your approach to conform with theirs when the situation requires it. [-SM]

Heh. I only get motion sick on the metro if I’ve just eaten. I actually enjoy it as a good place to take notes or read or just rest (if I can sit).

I have such intense motion sickness (i.e. inner ear imbalance, prone to Vertigo, etc.) that I can not take notes, read OR rest (i.e. close my eyes) when I’m in a moving vehicle. Most people who suffer motion sickness can not. I MUST look straight ahead and watch the direction I’m going so my eyes are picking up the same motion as my ears. It’s when I look away, or God forbid, sitting in one of those “backwards” seats or have to glance at my watch or check my BB, that all things go horribly wrong. [-SM]

Don’t get me wrong, some days I positively despise all things metro (especially when it occasionally doesn’t stop in Judiciary Sq…sure I don’t have to get off there, but that scares me). But I prefer it to DC driving.

I also prefer it to DC (city) driving and expensive parking, which is why I’m suffering this week. It’s the lesser of the two evils. LOL Under normal circumstances, I don’t have to go into the city. [-SM]

Ummm *hugs* hoping you feel better!!!

Now errr I am looking forward to those topics! Interesting to see if they match some of the things I’ve already picked up!

Aw man. I love the metro. Maybe just because there isn’t on in South Florida. LOL. Feel better and eagerly awaiting those career tips. They sound wonderful.

I get motion sickness in the metro too! My friends think I’m crazy and elitist for avoiding it. I find it helps to sit facing the left or right side of the train instead of forward or backward. The arms and legs help balance to the left and right whereas forward and backward motions are harder to contain.

    Good luck!

I cannot wait to hear what you’ve learned from the leadership classes. This information is right up my alley!

wow another thing in common. Motion sickness is the WORSE. I use to have to ride facing forward or standing cause if I sat in the backwards seat it was OVA!!! So I know just how you feel. If I am not driving, its awful.

What is we gon do?! lol

Oh and I can’t wait to read these posts. Good stuff!!!

Oh, I’m sorry. I actually like the Metro, in comparison to say, the NYC subway…no offense to those who love it.

But motion sickness is no fun. I get it when I try to read while riding in a car or on a train. At least today is the last day. Be well.

I feel for you !! I had vertigo twice. First time I thought I was dying. Never heard of anything that would make you feel as if you were super drunk/hangover and the world would just not stop spinning. 2nd time i went to the hospital with my own diagnosis. Both times they gave me antivert. Hope all went well today !!

I’m glad many of you know what I go through. When people hear me say I don’t like the metro, they think I’m saying “I’m too good for the metro.” when that isn’t the case at all. When I get motion sick, ALL of my senses are magnified - especially my sense of smell. My doc said it’s because my brain is trying so hard to focus, I pick up on everything. And I mean everything! LOL

I’ve had an inner ear imbalance all of my life. Unfortunately, it has gotten worse with age.

I’ve actually vomited at the Dupont Circle metro before because I got motion sick after starting a new birth control. It was really embarrassing. I feel your pain!

If my nausea was situational, my opinion of the metro would probably be different. I get sick because…well…just because I’m ME. [-SM]

But because I’m cheap and hate traffic, I deal with the metro for my commute. It’s free for me since my job pays for my metro cards. I can’t turn down free transportation!

If this will give you any idea how much I hate the metro, my job pays for my metro cards too. Although they pay for my parking pass as well (I have the option of either or), I’d still pay $10/day to park if they didn’t. I’d rather not be sick and be able to function at work than to save money. [-SM]

Oy vay, that’s awful. My coworker is the same way, and he takes Dramamine every day, twice a day, to deal with the train which is not nearly so bad as the Metro.

I can’t wait to hear what you’ve learned in your classes, I wish we had the same available here!
