Don’t Make Me Chop You in the Neck!!

No finance post today. Single Ma is in a foul mood because:

1 - BabyGirl brought home her interim report (half way thru grading cycle) this week. Two As, three Bs, one C, and a D+. *faint* The last two are in IB classes of course. The C was expected. We struggled with a few projects last month. Shyt was so hard, had ME wondering if *I* needed a tutor. Damn! But what REALLY pisses me off is the D+. WTF!! She’s NEVER brought home a D. Ever!! Add another slice of pissed to my off is that the D+ is in one of her STRONGEST areas…English!! This chic reads daily, she writes award winning essays, she comprehends like nobody’s business, she took the SAT in 7th grade for a gifted program and damn near ACED the reading portion. Mama is perplexed. If I have to hear one more time “but ma, this school is different - it’s HAAAAAAAARD,” I’ma bust a cap. I aint lying! Parent/teacher conference next week before I have to chop her in the neck.

2 - Had a lil sitchyashion with the JV cheerleading coach this week. I gave her a pass this time because mama aint tryna catch a case, but if BabyGirl comes home and tell me ONE MO’ GIN that she was aggressively placed in position (out of frustration) when she couldn’t get the stunt formation right, that bytch getting chopped in the neck.

3 - My rent check - $1,825 - was processed TWICE. Through my checking account out of wack. No one can explain this unusual phenomenon, but SOMEBODY is going to give me my money back…TODAY. If they come at me with “we’ll apply it to next month,” somebody’s getting chopped in the neck.

4 - A little punk went running to my supervisor because he didn’t like the changes I am making. While I wasn’t reprimanded per se, she advised me to be a little more gentle (read: diplomatic) because the office is going through growing pains. *sigh* Politics. I’m new to this position, and admittedly, my management skills are on par with SIMILAC. My initial instinct was to find that MF and chop him in the neck, but I have a better idea. Instead of making the changes quick and painful, now I’ll make them SLOW and painful. Doesn’t make sense, but either way works for me.

5 - I had a 4 day weekend planned with images of brown sand and blue water by way of Ocean City, MD. I intended to plop my lazy arse in a beach chair and not move for at least 36 hours, except to eat, sleep, and ____. I rented a 2br/2ba beach front condo for $300 and planned to pick up the keys tomorrow morning. Until…BabyGirl reminded me that she has a doctor’s appointment on SATURDAY AT 12PM. WTF!! When did I make THAT appointment? Umm, we made it AUGUST because that was the earliest this doctor could fit in a NEW patient. DAMN! I wish I could chop the doctor in the neck, but an overdue tetanus shot is kinda important.

That’s all I got.

I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A FABULOUS F*CKED UP WEEKEND!!

    SM,
You may be able to contact your bank and have them dispute the duplicate payment if your rental company doesn’t return the payment ASAP. Similar to a chargeback with credit cards, but for your checking acct. Good luck!!

    Ok Singla Ma,

This post was hilarious :)… I’ve been reading your blog for over year and have only posted once, however I couldn’t resist after reading this posting, you are truly pissed off this morning :).

As for babygirl, I can totally relate to your feelings towards her grades. I went thru a similiar situation when my son entered H.S., he went from being on the honor roll every year to barely making it to 10th grade. I think the change of schools really took a toll on him. So with that said, I just want to say be easy on babygirl, because changing school environments really is difficult for teens. I promise you she will definitely come back around to the genius you know she is!

I’m almost afraid to comment here

The good side is you are being blasted with all this at once. Just blow past it and move on.

The grades are the biggest issue - I know, need I remind you of my lazy son that received his name on a plaque for his high scores in the ISat’s only to come home with crappy report cards?

Oh Single Ma, I feel you on so many levels:

    1. with BabyGirl, there is only one question in my mind: did she do the best she could do? If not, no excuses. If so, maybe some more help to adjust to the new situation is required. Either way, action will be taken to bring the grades up to standard, I have no doubt.

    2. with the punk: I see this as a failure of both your supervisor and the punk. Why was your supervisor listening to the punk? The first question should have been, “Have you addressed these issues with Single Ma?” If the answer was “no” and I assume it would have been, then a “blank stare” was required. It sets a bad example when management allows employees to complain to them rather than talk to the person they are complaining about (and give constructive criticism). Only if you put the punk out without listening to him would he/she have been within rights to take it up with your supervisor. IMHO.

    3. with the very much needed weekend away, I got nothin’ except I am sorry…as another busy mom trying to juggle it all, I almost cried for you because given half a chance, I would have been right next to you on that beach and not happy if I couldn’t go.

I am with you there Single Ma. I have had my own sh*t hit the fan, and a lot of it this week. Stick with it and you’ll get through. I’d say go to the beach after the doctor’s appointment.

IB!! I did that in HS. After skating through years and years of schooling, IB was a real kick in the pants. I worked *hard*. Hard enough that by the time I got to college, it seemed easy by comparison. But, also hard enough that I paid my way through college entirely with scholarships, too (at a state school - which I would go to again without hesitation). And most importantly: I felt like I really learned how to think. It was agonizing at the time, but boy did I feel good when I got to college and knew how to set about writing a major research paper. It started me out ahead and I stayed there and am still doing well because of it.

Tell her not to keep working, and it will be worth it! I promise!

    Hi there, Single Ma,

I’ve never posted here before, but I felt like maybe my perspective would be helpful.

I did all IB classes in High-school and I noticed a difference right away. Everyone else would be out partying while I bashed my head into the shelves at the university library. BIG FUN.

Anyway, has BabyGirl’s teacher been clear with the class expectations? I found that my IB teachers could be a bit vague about exactly what it was that they wanted (hence the shelf bashing), especially since IB has so many intangible requirements (like the theory of knowledge class < -- also BIG FUN).

I guess what I’m trying to say is that, if BabyGirl is a good student and usually has good grades, it could just be that she was in the dark about what was needed. It’s hard to meet expectations if you don’t know what they are.

If you don’t mind me asking, what was the other IB subject that was so hard?

  11. D.C. 2, 5 October 2007, 14:29

Oh that’s just mean and wrong. We want you to have a better weekend since today was f’d up Single Ma.

  12. Single Ma, 5 October 2007, 15:00

@ Heather & anon 12:22 - Thanks for an IB experienced perspective. I didn’t take IB courses in HS so I appreciate your feedback. It actually helped to relieve some of my disappointment. My readers are so FABULOUS! :-)

Currently, she’s taking pre-IB courses, 10th grade. Next year, we expect to pursue the full IB diploma. To answer your question, the other pre-IB course is History.

I realize these classes are intense, require a significant amount of research, writing, and critical thinking. However, Literature is her STRENGTH so the D+ really through me for a loop. Then to hear her say “but Ma, in a regular class, that D is really a C. And if you really think about it, they grade on a 7 point scale, so it’s really a B.” I was DONE!! You should have heard her back peddling. LOL!

My expectations of her aren’t unrealistic because I know she can do the work. Perhaps she didn’t realize the amount of effort that would be required - this new school performs eons beyond the standard of excellence at the old school.

I just need the PT conference to find out where she went wrong and how we can get back on track. Education is a #1 priority in my home and I intend to do everything in my power to ensure her success.

    Thanks again for your input!

  13. Sistah Ant, 5 October 2007, 15:41

i’m sorry about all this stuff, but at least after you leave the doctor’s appointment, you can get your toes in the sand and let some of that other stuff subside for a minute…

  14. Tired of being broke, 5 October 2007, 17:24

Deep breaths, you can’t go chopping am to broke to bail you out.

Baby girl could just be under stress to adjusting to a new school and environment. After the parent teacher meeting, have a heart to heart and am sure you guys will be back on the same page. Support, support, support.

I say go to the doc appt. as early as possible and still go to the beach. Did you say brown sand? Is that the same thing as just plain dirt?

As for the check tell mofos you need your money back, ASAP.

    Have a fabulous weekend.

  15. Cynthia, 5 October 2007, 17:55

Vent away! Things always seem to pile on, don’t they? Thanks for the entertaining post. It was hilarious!

  16. MsJayy, 6 October 2007, 4:24

Whew! Hmmm…BG & the D+. Was she totally unaware that it was coming? Shoot, I remember prepping my Mom when I thought I smelt a C on the way. I did IB classes (that’s not what they were called in my day. lol) & I remember they nearly brought me to tears so I had a little tete-a-tete with my teacher & worked through some stuff. Um, don’t hurt the baby. Not till you have the conference.

#2 - um, remember I ain’t got no mo’ bail money BUT…I can write you some nice poetry to wile away the jail time. :O)

    #3 - BREATHE

#4 - did said punk come to you beforehand with his “concerns”? was your supervisor up on how you were gonna do thangs? girl, you making it hard for me to push ’send’ on these resumes

#5 - awwww…you can still salvage part of the weekend though right? get in a little time to perfect ya throat chop? cause you know, if you stressed when you’re administering it, it takes away some of the fun. Bwwwwwaaaaahhhhhaaaa

Seriously, I hope things picked up for you.

  17. Anonymous, 10 October 2007, 18:34

I know it’s a bit late to be commetin’ on this post but… we MUST be related… I keep talkin about punching someone in the throat
