Annual Pet Expenses

On April 1st, Single Ma’s pooch aka Precious turned 6 years old. I brought her home when she was 8 weeks and now she’s like my second child, only cheaper. Excluding the first year, my annual pet expenses are minimal. Most are from our annual vet visit when she gets a physical, several tests (fecal & heart worm), shots (distemper, bordetella, & rabies every 3 years), and free butt sniffs from the hor.ny males.
Other than that, we have recurring expenses for food, treats, coat whitening shampoo & conditioner, and quarterly grooming appts. We also have non-recurring expenses that consist of occasional meds, her carrier bag, bed, travel crate, toys, clothes, grooming supplies, and boarding.
Since many PF Bloggers think pet ownership is expensive, I started tracking how much I actually spend on Precious. In 2006, I spent $177.03 at the vet and $115.90 in recurring/non-recurring expenses for a total of $292.93.
Seven months into 2007, I’ve spent $185.07 at the vet and close to $60 in recurring expenses for a total of $245.07 with five more months to go.
Excluding any accidents or emergencies, I average about $300/year or $25/month. I’m sure many of you easily spend that much on other things, but they aren’t nearly as entertaining. Ever watch a dog chase her own tail for 20 minutes then give up from pure exhaustion? Or growl and bark at herself in the mirror like an identical intruder has invaded her territory? Comedy I tell ya.
The snuggle factor after a hard day’s work is an added bonus. Simply Priceless. For that alone, she’s earned a permanent spot in the Single Ma Queendom - as long as she stays on her end of the sofa. Otherwise, I might consider trading her in for a new pair of shoes.
Peace & Blessings

Great breakdown of pet expenses!
Since I track all of my expenditures, and for the record, my 2 pooches have cost me an average of $510 per year.
BTW, Priceless Precious is adorable.

Single Ma,
It really doesn’t matter the cost of the Precious pooch. They are like children, worth every penny. I love my Shih Tzu Buttons and his brother (who my mom has) Patches and his sister (who my sister has) Lexi and their mom and dad (who my brother own (Nyla and Ciroc). Can you tell we keep it in the family? Buttons is the greatest gift my brother has given me.

Precious is just that…..precious! Oh how cute. Pets are the greatest thing to me. I have a lab-rotweiller mix that is about 2 1/2 years old. He was my first real pet…I can’t count all the goldfish I killed throughout my childhood. lol
I agree, pets are worth the small expense, you can’t put a price on the unconditional love you get from a pooch!
Awww, look at that sweet face! I have two sweetie-babies myself and took into consideration that their breed (italian greyhounds) had to have their teeth cleaned at least once a year, at approx $500 a pop. I just set up a sinking fund and put away a bit each month for their healthcare.
They are my children. My two-legged child accused me once of loving them more than him…I think I took too long to deny it! LOL
Thanks for the post! I’ve been wanting to buy my son a dog but I thought it would be too expensive. Wooh, now I can. but first I’m gonna pay off my remaining credit card (of course).
See? Now you’re making me rethink my “no pet” logic. *sigh*
I agree with MsJayy. Dang it! I want one!
What a cutie!
