How Much is Too Much?

As I was preparing my March financial status post, I had to lean back and do a double take at the numbers. You know the lean like Craig and Smokey on Friday. *lean* Daaaaaaaaam!! I spent A LOT of money on clothes last month! I won’t disclose the actual number until my monthly review post, but I will say this – I’ve NEVER spent THAT much on clothes in any ONE month before.

To give myself some credit, I did drop a grip in preparation for the interview and it was worth every dime. They say ‘dress for success’ but I guess I took the phrase a little too literally. LOL! Before that, the most I’d ever spent on any ONE clothing item was $150 for a pair of boots. Some crazy, sexxy, cool boots too! But I’ve just created a whole new record for myself. Knocked it out the box! Ha! Under normal circumstances, I don’t think I would have spent that much nor do I think I will ever spend that much again.

So tell me, what’s the most you’ve ever spent on a single item of clothing? Suit, shirt, sweater, jeans, shoes, boots, whatever? And what’s the maximum you’d consider spending if it was something you REALLY wanted?

How much is TOO MUCH?

Peace & Blessings

Uh, my wedding dress at $1200.
Yeah. And I’m going to wear it once!! AAAGGGHH! But maybe that doesn’t count (yes it does, but let me be in denial). Aside from that, I think it was a party dress for $150.

The most I’ve ever spent was on my wedding dress (about $1000 after all alterations) and after that, I don’t believe I’ve spent more than $100 on any article of clothing or shoes!

The most I ever spent on any item of clothing was $100.00 on shoes. I am way too cheap to spend more on anything.
I have to say thank you for your blog. I just came upon it the other day and you have inspired me beyond words. I have now started a ING challenge to save x amount of $ by June 2008. Keep it up Fab, keep it up.

Aside from my wedding dress, I think it was probably in the $150-200 range. I don’t think for a really nice dress or suit that much money is ridiculous. Sometimes you pay for quality and if you are going to wear something for a long time, it’s worth every penny! Of course, I say that but when it comes time to shell out the money – I’m just talking a good game.

I have spent $600 on a purse and it didn’t hurt that bad:)

    7. GeckoGirl, 4 April 2007, 5:53

Prior to buying my wedding dress ($1000+), the most I’d spent on one item was $300-ish for a pair of shoes. Now I love those shoes but I probably wouldn’t do it again.

I don’t really have a set maximum because of the time, when it comes to “extravagant” items, I don’t think they’re worth the money. I’m too logical. I need someone to prove to me how $1000 boots are 10x better than $100 boots. LOL.

      $1200 on a Prada bag—

This is a tough one, though I like to look nice and keep my style in check….I always shop sales, clearance racks & thrift stores! Probably my big ticket item was my Pea Coat from Lands End at $120, but I had a coupon and free shipping!! I may LIVE in Florida, but I travel to some cold places!! LOL !

clothing – ann taylor suit – $450 *3 pieces plus 2 shirts* :) it was a bundle I couldn’t break it up LOL

      shoes – $150-200

Purse – *before kids* $1100 Gucci
*after kids* *200 Coach *outlet and out of season* LOL

Now that I have responsibilities. I don’t impulse buy or justify purchases anymore.. the only thing I don’t skimp on is my work clothes.. for the office or the gym.. but I do try to maximize my dollars on sales i.e. nordstrom semi-annual workout clothes sale or the monthly sales at ann taylor or hit up the outlets

Geez. Lesson learned from the comments is don’t get married or don’t wear a real wedding gown. My unused wedding dress was $750 at David’s Bridal in Rockville. My most expensive suit? A $2K Max Mara double breasted summer weight wool pant suit for $800 on sale. Alterations weren’t free, which is dumb since they were about 30 bucks.

But that suit is awesome and has paid for itself in increased remuneration with each new job. I’ve worn it for the last 7 years and I wear it to every interview. Geeks don’t care that the cut is a tad outdated. Just looking sharp and classy is usually enough.

Might be time for a new one. I think $100 a year for a suit I’ve had for almost 8 is ok. Don’t you? (ok, maybe not, but Frumperella has to have SOME fantasies about nice clothes.)

I have spent $250 on a hideous bridesmaid dress, but I don’t count that as it wasn’t out of my free will, believe me!!!

I had a gift certificate I won in a raffle, so it wasn’t really money, but I spent $100 on Dankso sandals last summer. It was actually a very good investment as they will last me for ten years at least and are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. Plus, they are recommended by doctors as they are very good for your feet and posture, and I’m getting lame/responsible enough to listen to that stuff now. ha.

$500 on a pair of over the knee, designer boots – marked down, on clearance. Ahh, the early 90s. LOL.

About a month ago I bought a Marc Jacobs bag and it set me back $995 (always sounds better than a cool grand) and that’s the most I’ve ever spent on anything. But after paying off student loans and getting a new job a salary increase I wanted to treat myself. It is a classic bag that will last years to come, it’s black so it goes w/everything and I always figure CPW — cost per wear. I look fanf***intastic with it, too if I do say so my damn self. Congrats again on the new gig, Single Ma!!!

I’m glad some people decided to come clean because I was ready to blow up some spots in here! I’ve seen some LOOT, CHEESE, DOLLARS, whatever spent on purses, shoes, etc….

I’ll be fair and answer this instead of just talking ish…$495 on a suit and that was on sale. We guys are different. We spend our money on other unnecessary stuff :)

    16. Madame X, 4 April 2007, 9:57

Let’s see, I think my max is a little over $300 for a pair of shoes… about $500 for a suit… and about $250 for a BCBG dress that I’ve never worn– I should know exactly how much it costs because I took it out the other night to see if my mother could alter the shoulder straps for me and it still has the tags on!

I hope you saved some of your clothing budget to buy your bridesmaid dress for my wedding…

    17. Anonymous, 4 April 2007, 14:38

about 150 on a dress I wore to my brother’s wedding. (I know I’ve spent more than that on bridesmaids’ dresses so I’ll leave that out) as far as how much is too much I think it depends on how much you can really afford the quality of the item. I don’t think anyone should pay for low quality, no matter how much money you have.

$150 on a collector’s edition Barbie Doll that I don’t keep at my place because I am afraid of someone stealing (I leave it with my Grandma)

    21. prlinkbiz, 5 April 2007, 6:01

Funny, it isn’t always the big ticket items that add up- its all the smaller ones, because I think, wow, this is only $x, I can get some other stuff too…

I also spent more than I wish I would have on clothes and such over the last month (no new job to blame!)- maybe because it’s spring? Who knows- anyway, I decided I must have too much money floating around so I am buying another house. lol

    22. honugurl16, 5 April 2007, 12:01

$100 on a dress… I love me some Cinnamon Girl dresses. Can’t resist ‘em. I only buy them a couple times a year though.

I don’t have to spend that much on work clothes, though. I’m a teacher in non-air conditioned work conditions, so we’re allowed to wear jeans to work.

    23. Monica H, 5 April 2007, 12:11

I had to think about this one for a minute.

The most expensive item I’ve purchased was a bracelet for right around $870.

    24. akilaz, 5 April 2007, 12:33

$3000 for my iMac. Cash. Yes it has all the bells and whistles and I covet it.

    25. Single Ma, 5 April 2007, 14:51

Ok, so what I gather from these comments is to NEVER get married and stay away from designer purses.

*taking notes* I think I can handle at least one of them. LOL

The rest of y’all are big ballers. I’m obviously out of my league. Where are the rest of the struggling people like me? HA HA
