The Fvck You Fund
Yea, I said it. The Fvck You Fund!! he he he
How many of us have them? Tired But Happy has one and I want one too! Well, she was more tactful than me with the descriptive words, but so are most PF Bloggers. LOL She actually calls it the “F.U. Fund” and describes it as:
…enough cash that would allow you to say “F*** you” to your employer and walk out? How much liquid cash would you need to feel that you could voluntarily walk away from your main income stream without another one lined up? I’ve been thinking about this lately, as *cough cough* a very close friend’s employer finds new ways to demoralize, devalue and dehumanize the workers in her department. My friend is getting near the breaking point, and she’s thinking about quitting.
Hmm…
This post made me think because a sista is turred. Maaaaaaaaan, they workin’ me like a Hebrew slave from the lowest tribe in the food chain. Where is sista Tubman when you need her? I think I’ve pulled 30 hours already and it’s only Tuesday!!!!!! Granted, this schedule is temporary (unlike some people I know, sorry Miguel LOL) and the pay is nice, but daaaaaaaaaayum. This hustle can break ya down…even if ya fabulous. On the weekend, all I feel like doing is eating, sleeping, and blog stalking. LMAO! Me and this laptop are becoming REAL friendly, but I digress…
Antyhoo…
What if I wanted to tell my employer F.U.? Do I have my chips stacked so I can walk away with pride? Umm…how about NOOO!! Like Tired But Happy, I have an emergency fund that could hold me over for close to a year, but it’s for E-MUR-JAN-SEEZ. Quitting my job because I feel like it doesn’t really constitute an emergency. Or does it? LOL
For personal finance purposes, I’d like to consider an “F.U. Fund” as passive income. Meaning cash flow that will continue to accrue even if I didn’t physically work for it. Think rental income, think interest income, think dividends, think business ownership, think joining the Mafia, think becoming a PIMP. Uh, scratch that last part. My dreams get wild like that. LOL
So if you feel like going postal just thinking about your daily grind, might I suggest you read about when an “F.U. Fund” is needed the most. If anything on that list is close to your reality, get yo’ shyt together (i.e. budget, credit, investments, etc.) right now so you’ll be prepared to say…

Hey SM! Workin on gettin my shyt together…still ready to tell em (IN ALL CAPS)…FU!!
How comfortable would you have to be to give up G-14 classified? (w/o being too specific, hehehe!)
LMAO- How about not only a little FU fund, but a part time business to actually leave to? I know I know that sounds crazy when you are working so much right now. Just something to consider! Take care girl!
Yes, yes, yes…in this day & age I think we all need to have an FU fund. I’m working on mine. Started serious planning last year after some layoffs.
I think everyone needs a FU fund. I particularly think young women who shack up need one so they can say FU to a boyfriend who does not behave himself.
Good idea. Especially since nothing is guaranteed. I’d rather tell them FU than have it be the other way around. I’m already working on my retirement fund, and my kids college fund … now I need an FU fund. Sheeeesh!
Ma,
Now you know you don’t even have to ask me about my FU Fund.
In my business, you gotta have a FU Fund. Cause when things get bad, it’s like a bunch of rabid dogs fighting over the last scraps and bones. And the way this works is that things get really bad about every 5-8 years. I’ve been through so many corp restructurings, it would make your head spin. The 1st time I went thru this, in my 1st real corp job after college, the boss would call us individually into his office to let us know whether we were staying or going – and this would happen every 6 months. You never knew when you walked into that office if security would be waiting for you when you walked out.
At that time, I had no FU Fund, only massive amounts of student loans and CC bills. The fear and anxiety during that period of time is etched on my brain. And when things get like that, everybody in the office is on edge, nobody can be trusted, and it just gets worse and worse. And the worst part is they can smell the fear. Have you noticed it’s always the most desperate, nervous people who are one the receiving end of the most abuse. The ones who act like “go ahead, make my day” they leave alone – just like on the playground… hmmm. Is it me or does it seem like the less you need the money, the better you get treated. I dunno – just my observations.
Well, all that taught me the value of having FU money. Now, when bonus time comes around, some of it goes into the piggy bank, some into the play pen, and some into the FU account.
Girl, that is why I do not have my brand new wheels yet:
Red Porsche 911 Turbo: $120,000
Parking Garage: $4200/yr
Aviator sunglasses: $400
Leather driving jacket: $1500
FU Fund: Priceless
Miguel has a point:
Is it me or does it seem like the less you need the money, the better you get treated. I dunno – just my observations.
yes indeed that is true. If you have on your F-a-job face at all times they leave you alone. LOL
Great poset. Working on my FU fund.
I really needed this.. Now I know a sista shouldn’t be complainin since I just got a promotion and all BUT.. a position opened up that is more in line with my degree.. not one that they are creating so I won’t leave my dept.. and I talked NICELY about it with my boss and do you know what that HEFFA said… DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT I WON’T SIGN THE PAPERS AND IT WILL GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE..I’LL CONVENIENTLY FORGET TO READ THAT EMAIL… WTF.. then on to.. IF YOU WANT A JOB IN HR THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO LEAVE THE CU BUT AS LONG AS YOU ARE HERE YOU WILL BE WITH ME.
I’m just getting over this.. I’ve been blown all morning.. I need a fuckin break..
Miguel, so true:
“And I said, I don’t care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I’m, I’m quitting, I’m going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they’ve moved my desk four times already this year … ”
Feeling Office Spacey, anyone?
Just keep your hands off my red stapler Ms. Miniducky… :)
I agree that having that FU FUND can be critical to your metal health when dealing with a bad boss/job situation. But if you are just starting to save for one, something else you can do is start to revamp your resume, look at reducing your expenses, think about a part-time job that could help you save faster now and if you finally blow your stack and tell your boss to stick it where the sun don’t shine… you have another income stream to help you pay the bills while you hunt for the better job…
With the week I have had, I nee a Fuck you fund bad.
So I will be building a FU Fund and an E-fund at the same time.
I have always called mine the “Go To Hell” option. Everybody needs to be able to have the option of telling their boss to go to hell. I have never had to use it, but it is nice having. Consider a dignity protection vehicle. Yes, there is some crap I won’t put up with.
Oh, I plan to say F.U. to working for someone else altogether in the next five years. I’ve got some hurdles to jump — wedding, debt elimination, house purchase — but I’ve already started sketching a plan of the things I need to do to be able to pack up my desk and walk out of the building without looking back. I love my current job, but I can’t take getting up every morning and going to nobody’s job…
OOOH I like this idea. I did have an ‘I need a vacation fund’ so that every time I gave up something (like a movie) because I want to save money, I directly put it in the vacation fund.
But the FU fund…MMMMM….if you do it right, others at work might donate to it, too. If you come in my office to bitch, you must donate to the FU fund…OH YEAH!
Great idea. I have met all my saving goals I established approx 18 months ago and I’ve been trying to establish some new ones.
Although, my boss knows I don’t need the job – he was my boss the year I paid off all my debt and he knows that if I get too stressed, I will walk away in a heartbeat. But that walking away entailed me downsizing my lifestyle. I need an FU fund so I can maintain my current lifestyle.
it’s what my mother used to call mad money. money to have when you get mad!
Trust me, I think about dippin into mine on a DAILY!!!!!
These comments are hilarious – and so true!
Thinking about the FU Fund concept, a FU Fund really is simply an emergency fund. Rainy day funds for when things get bad – whether that’s a job loss (or a FU ahole, I quit), a family health problem, or any major financial drain that comes along suddenly and unexpectedly.
Everybody says you need an emergency fund and I agree. But what I think you also need is a plan. My plan is to keep my fixed expenses as low as possible, know how much I’m spending (and therefore understand how much I’d need to live on), and build up my savings and investments. The plan is also about having a balance between an enjoyable lifestyle now and delayed gratification. And sometimes, the security of having the money in the bank outweights my impatience to have it all right now. It’s more complicated than that, but that is the outline.
P.S. Maybe I better not wait too long for the sports car – It’d be more fun to drive before I hit the geriatric years.
Sorry about the double post.
By the way, David Bach provides the following recommendations on putting aside emergency funds:

WHOA, WOW, and HA!! I didn’t expect this post to generate so much discussion. Very interesting. Glad to know I’m not the only one that has thought about saying “FU!” on the C.S.S.
@ stacey – Let’s just say I’d have to be REEEEEEEEEAL comfortable and I have a LOOOOOOOOONG way to go. LOL
@ miguel – confident people with their finances in order are usually the top performers.
IMO, the FU fund is different from my emergency fund. The latter is in preparation for things *outside* of my control. The former is for a spare of the moment whim when *I* have chosen to do something that would otherwise be considered irresponsible.
Like that $120,000 car you can obviously afford, deserve, and is loooong overdue. Go ahead and buy your dream wheels before it’s too late…old man. You only live once. :-)
@ miniducky/jane – LOL @ the office space references. The producers of that movie were right on point with reality.
@ bk diva – I ‘hope’ she was just kidding. If not, don’t let her knock your hustle. It’s obvious she cares more about her dept than your professional development. That would be my cue to start looking for another gig.
@ all – mad money, go to hell money, need a vacation fund, whatever you prefer to call it…add it to your financial priority list because you never know when you may need it.
As usual, you have a way of slicing right to the heart of the issue. I had not thought about the FU fund vs. the emergency fund in quite that way. Food for thought.
Re, the car, not to worry Ma, if it was really all that important the keys would already be in my pocket.
Excellent post. Left an employer once without the fund and it was harrowing. Learned from the experience. Now I’m working on it.
Even working on the fund, completely changed my attitude at work. I don’t stress about stuff happening.
Excellent post and congratulations on the Wiki reference:-)
