My Drama With OneUnited Bank is OVER

Thank Gawd!!

If you’re looking for a high yield savings account, sign up for ING Direct using a referral link to earn $25 with an initial deposit of $250. That’s an immediate 10% return. Then once you have an account, you can refer up to 25 people for an additional $10 each.

I tried to keep my wrath in one post, but if you missed it, here’s a recap.

- I opened the account on June 23rd
- The money was withdrawn from my checking account 4 days later
- By July 3th, I still did not have access to the OneUnited account
- This prompted multiple phone calls to customer service, to no avail, emails to executives which were deleted, and lots of frustration

July 7th update:

Just FYI to all - I never received a call back. Hmph, go figure! However, I did receive an email. They asked me how they could improve their services and I linked them to my blog post because I wanted them to see my complaint in detail. Since I have no interest in continuing the business relationship, there’s not much they can do to make me change my mind anyway because I’m beyond pissed.

To make matters worse, they told me I could NOT close my account via any written request (email or snail mail). Since it is an online account, I could only transfer the money out. Hello, I can’t access it!! Then the person in the email (no signature or identifying information re: name, email address, phone, fax, etc. like most businesses require) said they didn’t “anticipate activating my account before next Monday.” WTF!! That’s July 10th!! For an account that was opened on June 23rd!! 17 friggin days!! Ummm, how about activating the account before you withdraw money from a person’s checking account!! Jeez!! I can’t wait to be rid of them and I intend to share my experience with everyone I know.

All I can say is good luck to anyone who has an account with them, and for all others — consumer beware!!

July 13th update:

I’m finally able to access the account. The web interface is nothing impressive. I was too threw when I saw tabs at the top of the page with misspelled words. WTF!!! Somebody show me how to post a screen shot, please! LOL
(UPDATE to add screen shot)

Serious issue - the email person (remember they gave me no name) told me to transfer my money out. Guess what!!??!!?? There’s no way to link the account to another bank!!

You can only do inter transfers to another OneUnited account. The only way to get your money is to submit a manual request that asks for everything but your blood type. I felt like I was applying for a new account all over again.

The top of the page says your request may take four business days to process your transfer request. Basically a whole friggin week. WTF!!!

Ok, after you enter your name, address, ss#, bank name, routing number account number, amount to transfer, etc., you click submit and wait. There’s no confirmation number, no message on the next page, no email to let you know they received your request. Nothing!

You just WAIT…wait and wonder if you did everything right…and wait a whole week for YOUR money. The 5%+ rate is nice, but for all this BS, NO THANK YOU!!

Further, I read here that there’s a fee after 6 months of inactivity. So if I can’t close my account (only transfer money out), will I be charged inactivity fees after 6 months? I guess I’ll know soon enough. *sigh*

Oh yea, one more thing. I sent an email to two of the bank’s executives. It was a very professional and detailed email outlining my experience to date, why I originally chose the bank, but why I now have concerns. The email wasn’t complaining, it wasn’t whiny, nor was it accusatory. It was professional and clearly stated the facts. I included my real name, address, and home/cell phone number if they wanted to contact me (or have someone else contact me) for future reference. I attached read receipts to both emails and they were both deleted.

I will NOT give a bank my life’s savings or consideration of future investments that has such limited NO concern for its customers.

And finally, on July 21st:

My money was deposited back into my checking account and the OneUnited account balance is ZERO. For reasons that make absolutely no sense to me, they wouldn’t let me close it, but as long as my money isn’t in it, I consider it closed. If they try to charge me inactivity fees after six months, it’ll be on ’cause I aint the one!

I sent one last email to discuss my dissatisfaction, I attached read receipts, and it was also deleted. Customer service at its finest. I can’t say I’m all that surprised because, sadly to say, I’ve never been impressed by the customer service from most black owned companies. I want to support the black community but it’s hard to settle for less when there’s so much competition. We have many obstacles to overcome, but sometimes, we create big boulders for ourselves. We need to do better and step up our game!!

As I told the person who referred me to the bank, I hope the company succeeds, but I would never consider being a customer again and I’ll share my experience with everyone I know. It’s water under the bridge now, at least for 6 months, and I’m glad it’s over.

wow, yes that does suck. i’d like to support black businesses as well, but not if the service is wack like this.

    this is a shame.

i heard the CEO of OneWorld banks on the radio a few months ago & i thought about opening a savings account with them, but after your experience…i think i will just switch my ING Account to HSBC (or maybe keep them both open we’ll see).

    thanks for the warning!

Wow. That’s terrible. Have you thought of complaining to the Better Business Bureau, or some banking regulatory agency? That makes no sense that you can’t close your account via snail mail. Seems kind of sketchy to me in an illegal way, and not just bad customer service.

Maybe we should Google Bomb them like Carl Grossman? (oh no! PF Bloggers will start calling Google Bombing a ‘Grossman’)

It’s a damn shame because the purchasing power of the black community is tremendous.
For their sake I hope they get their act together.

This bank actually sounds a bit shady, as in not legit. How do you have misspelled words on your website?

I’m sure you do this already, but I would keep an eye on my credit reports and other accounts. Print out a copy of their privacy policy. If they have all your pertinent information, they may do something shady with it.

Also make sure they aren’t linked to your checking account anymore. The fact that they took money out for you, but didn’t let you access it makes me think they were robbing Peter to pay Paul.

    The power of the blog!

Another blogger who was renovating her home blasted the foundation crew (with photos) on her web site and poof! Results! I’m surprised that the company hasn’t asked you to remove the post!

I agree with L. Britt. Watch ‘em.

  6. MsJayy, 26 July 2006, 5:11

That is absolutely ridiculous! I’m glad you were able to get your money back but dang, their customer service is straight up sh*tty! I hope that anyone else who has had a similar experience wrote/emailed them to make it known. Whew! I’m so irritated right now, I’ma have to make a “shoe sale run” at lunch…and it ain’t even my money!!

  7. supermom, 26 July 2006, 10:23

What the??? I’m speechless..and that’s rare. They do sound shady. Thank God that you got your money out. Doesn’t it really suck when we try to support our community and this happens? It’s happened to me, but not on this scale. This….I have NO words…

  8. Tazzee, 27 July 2006, 16:20

How did I miss this post. Honestly, you should send Tavis Smiley a link to this post because he advertises this bank with the Covenant with Black America.

  9. Anonymous, 29 July 2006, 21:36

This is important! If they end up charging you an inactivity fee and then on top an NSF fee since u dont have money it will be reported at least to Chexsystem and maybe the credit reports… in short it could be a lot of mess for nothing…

My advise: try to have the account closed, notify the BBB (Better business Beaure) and file a complaint with the FTC. That’s how I got something similar done and it was solved in a matter or 4 days where as I dealt with those people for over 2 months!!

Wow, thanks for the heads up. Being the guinea pig can sometimes be hard!

@ anon - good, good point. I’m on it!

I’ve been trying to close this account since July 7th. The account balance is zero as of July 21st. Why did I just receive an ATM card on July 29th? *roll eyes*

This account needs to be officially closed, for good.

Fuck you, bitch and fuck every last one of you dumb people who believe this moronic bitch’s blog. One United is an excellent bank, which offers a superb savings rate that no other bank in the COUNTRY, white or black, can top and this is black owned. I love my account and I love watch my money grow every day with that interest rate. The bank owner has a noble goal of bringing up black america with his bank and you fucking shitheads would rather stick your fucking money in a white-owned bank. Shit like you are the downfall of blacks in this country.

  13. Single Ma, 5 August 2006, 12:52

@ anon - I started to delete your comment, but I wanted everyone to see your intelligent contribution to this discussion. I’ve been called worse, so your name calling doesn’t bother me.

Despite our differences of opinion regarding OneUnited Bank - you don’t have to like what I say, but on my blog, you WILL respect me (and my readers).

With that said, I’m glad you feel strongly enough to share your thoughts with us. Even happier that you are saving rather than spending all of your disposable income. However, the intent of your message (which was valid and wouldn’t have been disregarded) was lost between your indignant choice of words.

If you think people (I mean “shit” LOL) like me are “the downfall of blacks in this country,” then it’s disheartening to believe that people like you are uplifting us.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

  14. Another Single Ma, 23 August 2006, 12:35

Hi Single Ma. I opened an account with One United Bank about 4 weeks ago, (1 day before I read your blog.) I will admit that I did have some issues in the beginning but I dealt with a WONDERFUL customer service rep named Charmaine. She was prompt in returning my phone calls and got all of my issues resolved. I’m happy to say that my account has been fully functional for two weeks.

  15. Anonymous, 7 September 2006, 15:08

i opened my OneUnited account about 2 weeks ago and haven’t had any problems with it. it took a while to set up and for the money to get in but other than that its been fine. i can’t say the same about Washington Mutual though. They have a 5% APY statement savings when you open an free checking account online but they’re website is damn near impossible to deal with. I swear i’ve gone through the application process like 10 times and always get some kind of error at the end.

ACTUAL RESPONSE TO/FROM/ABOUT MY APPLICATION FOR A SAVINGS ACCT WITH ONE UNITED BANK:
    —————————————-
DECLINED???? Why? Bank Of America AND Navy Federal Credit Union BOTH gave me accounts….. and I still have those accounts, in excellent standing… Same with INGDIRECT and EMIGRANTDIRECT……..what makes One United Bank any different?

And get this…… here’s the kick in the ass people:

I got declined for a SAVINGS ACCOUNT?????? Not a credit card, not a loan, not a checking etc.. In other words I am not asking for money, I’m trying to GIVE One United Bank my money!!! Ain’t this some Sh1^…. You would think there is something wrong with a bank not wanting money!!

Here I go trying to support “BLACK AMERICA’S BANK” as they call it, and start putting money in a bank that allegedly caters to “black” folk…. and I get declined… Maybe cause I’m not black enough? Not good enough? Even better… maybe my name is too Afrikan/Eastern for them?

“Black America’s Bank” ???? Yeah okay.. Guess white American banks appreciate my black money more than you do.. I will be sure to spread the news to my fellow onliners….

I make an above poverty level income, have already established credit, and have verified all my info to you online, and I get declined???? With not even so much as a request for a phone call or anything???

Y’all are joking right? Well I’m not. All you “black” banks need to stop trying to cater to us “blacks” when all you do is less than what “white” banks offer..
This is why black folks/business suffer: jive talk.

Having worked for them for 8 years I knwo that they really could not care less about their customers, especially if you do not have more than $100,000 to deposit. Get the hint…if you are just a regular consumer, they don’t give a damn abot you!

  18. Anonymous, 19 October 2006, 14:28

I wish I’d seen this blog a few months ago. I have almost the exact story. I opened a savings account online in June. It took until AUGUST to be able to log in to access the account. Thankfully I didn’t have an emergency and need to access the money because I couldn’t. After numerous calls to customer service I finally was able to get through to a live person. I wanted to close the account and have my money put back into my checking account with Bank of America. They said they could not because I still had to have access online to do so. Finally the issue with online log in was resolved (after 2 months) and everything seemed fine. In late August, I had a question and just emailed customer service to save time. I have NEVER received a response. Luckily, I figured out the answer on my own. Then, we come to today. October. My account has been funded since June. I tried to access my money from an ATM - which mind you, this is my first transaction and attempt at retrieving my money - and it was ‘TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE”. At this point I am furious because I have had nothing but problems with this and I was really needing the money NOW!! That’s why I was at an ATM. So I get home, call customer service, wait 25 minutes and get a recording saying hours are closed. I knew this is not true because I see the clock. So I call back. I wait on my cell phone for another 47 minutes and finally someone picks up. She tells me that they had my ATM card numbers in her computer were incorrect and I should be able to access it tomorrow. Great. So much for my “emergency savings account”!! Then, i ask her how to go about closing the account. Not once does she inquire about what is wrong, what can they do to keep my business, nothing! She tells me to fax in a clear copy of my drivers license, account number, name, blah blah blah to a number and they will process the request. That’s more verification than I gave to open the account! There is no way at all that I am faxing all of that information to who knows where only to hear that it went no where and the account is never closed. I’d love to walk straight into a branch and close it but I live thousands of miles from any of their branches. Lucky me. I read the above posting about the inactivity fees and now I don’t know what to do. I am going to be withdrawing my money over the next few days (since there is a max amount of withdrawls during 24 hours) then I WANT TO CLOSE IT AND LET EVERYONE KNOW TO NEVER OPEN AN ACCOUNT WITH ONE UNITED BANK AGAIN. I will gladly put my money back into the “white” bank that I don’t earn much interest on, but I’ve never had problems with either.

Wow…I too am having a similar experience. I heard about this bank from the Steve Harvey Morning Show back in September. I thought I did my research, googling the bank for reviews, etc. This blog did not appear in my search for some reason, so I’m thinking the bank is reputable and I applied for the online savings account. It took awhile for the account to be approved. But as others have stated, I could not gain access to my account online! I sent an email, made a phone call today, sent another email today. Then I did another search and I came upon this blog. I am so very upset now. As soon as I gain access to my account, I will be withdrawing my funds and depositing them back to my Bank of America account. You really should send an email to Steve Harvey’s morning show, since I’m sure I’m not the only one who was influenced by his endorsement. Thank you for blogging! I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

  20. Single Ma, 3 November 2006, 23:56

I searched with no luck. If someone could post or email me the email address to Steve Harvey, his show or his people, I will write to him about our collective experiences with OneUnited Bank.

    Thanks!

  21. Anonymous, 7 November 2006, 13:56

I review this blog every so often because as I stated previously, I worked at this bank for many years and know how badly they treat their customers. I also know how you may get some satisfaction. You will not get any satisfaction calling Steve Harvey. You can get some satisfaction by contacting the regulatory agencies that regulate OneUnited. OneUnited is headquartered in Massachusetts and they are regulated by the Massachusetts Division of Banks and the FDIC. If anyone wants the complete addresses and contact info for those regulatory agencies please indicate that here. Please be respectful and detailed and provide written back up when corresponding with them. I assure you, they take all complaints seriously…as they should.

  22. Single Ma, 7 November 2006, 17:42

Your comments are duly note and appreciated. However, satisfaction is relative depending on intent. My purpose for requesting Steve’s info is because he’s marketing this bank to his audience. I’m sure he’s being paid by OUB but he should be aware of what he’s supporting.

Since my previous comment, someone emailed me the info I requested. I haven’t had time to follow through (yet), but when I do, my message will be clear.

My blog gets over 1,000 page views per day (many searching for info on OUB). So after sharing my experience on my blog, moving my money, closing the account, and contacting Steve at the request of my readers, I am satisfied.

  23. Anonymous, 3 December 2006, 8:05

Wow, I am glad I did a google. My husband and I heard the last interview on Steve Harvey also. I saved One United on my favorites and was going to open an account today. But something told me to google it first. Thank God! It would be great if this bank was professional. Just as everyone is NOT going to join because of this blog, it would be the same if there was something good to post, so that everyone could join, support and build a strong financial institute.

  24. Anonymous, 11 December 2006, 12:37

i am steaming because i too made the mistake of joining up with one united. i am passed upset and will be working out something serious to handle the stress this ordeal has caused…

  25. Anonymous, 26 December 2006, 10:08

Trust me… these so called “black” banks are fueled with uppity Negroes with beyond reasonable standards… Since last leaving a comment above with their response attached, I have stayed with USAA.COM (for military affiliated persons) and Bank Of America. Since alot of people dont qualify for USAA, I will spare the talk about it (though I feel it’s the best damn bank in the U.S.).. Bank Of America is by far a superior bank to One United Bank. I always get GREAT service with a smile, and I never get hassles.. UNLESS (now get this kick in the ass folks…,)it’s at a branch run by a Negroe !!! I’m dead serious… Talk about black on black crime?? How bout black on black period. In Beaufort South Carolina, the small branch near KMart has TERRIBLE banker service, (not the tellers, they are cool)due to the white bankers’ ignorant stereotyping of me and my friends….after complaining about her behavior, and getting confirmation that she did in fact act “unlike bank general practice” I went down to the Main Branch…Guess what I got there…and by the way, run by whites, GREAT SERVICE. No hassle. No drama. Why oh why do we get the Negrotude from our own, while we steady get ridiculed for going to the “man”??????? Black people, WAKE UP!!

The only color you should be concerned with is GREEN. Black banks do..

  26. Anonymous, 17 October 2007, 19:27

    10/17/07

Wow… I am so glad to have learned about your blog.

I’m starting an effort for African Americans to Bank with black banks but, we most certainly wouldn’t want to push a bank with these sorts of issues from customers.

I would think the President of the bank should review the complaints about the bank and take care of these issues right away and DO SOME serious outreach to the community to prove how they improved

  27. Anonymous, 21 October 2007, 9:27

I wish I read your blog before I signed up with One United. I was very happy with my old internet savings account, FNBO Direct. They offer 24/7 customer service, but then they lowered their interest rate too much and I wanted to switch to One United.

It’s been a hassle ever since I started. They did the same thing to me as they did to all of you. They withdrew the money from my checking account before starting my account and the money was “lost” for about a week.

To this day I am still receiving e-mails from One United telling me to finish setting up my accounts, even though I have already established an online account (apparently filling out all the paperwork at the beginning doesn’t actually get you an account, just a way for them to take your money). I’ve also begun transferring money .

Their internet banking website is extremely unimpressive, although not as bad as HSBC’s.

The representatives I’ve spoken with are extremely confusing and contradict each other. The communication between the bank and the customer is also poor. Do not expect to be informed when things are completed or approved, you’re just supposed to know. I still have not received my paperwork in the mail that I was promised…2 weeks ago.

It’s not worth the extra savings, I think I’m going back to FNBO Direct. They know how to treat customers.

  28. Anonymous, 10 November 2007, 13:42

I had a not so positive experience on the second account I set up with One United Bank. But once we ironed out the issue the experience has been positive.
They may not be as effective and efficient as the big banks but it works and the interest rate is great…and for me working with a black bank is empowering and fulfilling.
I believe if we give them an opportunity to work out the kinks this will be “One United Bank” for all of us. We must support black bank and financial institutions and assist them in following the model of positive customer service.
If you are honest with yourself we can all think of negative experiences with the bigger and financially stronger companies.
Do the bigger and financially stronger banks really want us or our money???

  29. Anonymous, 12 January 2008, 11:51

OMG, I was just going to open an account. Great interest rates, but now I’m going to skip it. I actually thought the site’s interface and home page were great (this is 2008 now, tho), but I want to thank you for posting about this.

  30. Anonymous, 18 January 2008, 15:53

uh, oh. I just came across this blog today, and I opened a One United account online in late December. I had been going online for the past week trying to access the account, but no luck. Today, I called. I ended up transferred to a “technical services company” — a separate company from the bank — even though the bank person who transferred me didn’t tell me I was being transferred to some separate entity. The technical services person couldn’t help me and told me that I needed to call One United Bank (up to that point, I though I was talking to One United). I will try calling again next week. I’m only glad that I didn’t transfer the bulk of my savings when I opened the account. I had actually been trying to do that today when I was trying to get online. Won’t be doing that after what I’ve read here.

    Suckers!!

  32. Lucky, 25 January 2008, 11:12

I found OUB is listed at “Bankrate.com” as the top interest-paying bank and have been trying to access OUB’s website to open an account for several days without any luck. All I have been able to get was hours of a page trying to download. Glad I stumbled on this blog, I will stop trying to access them. THANKS!!!

  33. Anonymous, 26 January 2008, 12:18

Thank you everybody for your posts! Thank God you saved me my hard earned $1000. I was about to open an account a few minutes ago after I saw the UnitedOneBank mention from this website. http://www.thetaoofmakingmoney.com/2007/09/21/510.html.
I went to the press releases on the UOB website and they said they got a mention on Money Magazine which I have a subscription for. January 2008 edition page 40 under Bank Money-Market Accounts. So I thought, hey this must be a good bank! Thank you for the anonymous poster about FNBO direct, I will try looking at their savings account.

  34. Anastasia, 28 January 2008, 10:14

Thank you so much for posting all these stories! I almost closed my FNBO Direct savings after the interest rate dropped to 4.5 and moved it to OU until I read this. I definitely would have been one of the people that had everything go wrong that could. Thank you for posting all the responses, good and bad. You’re awesome! Keep on keepin’ on.

  35. Anonymous, 28 January 2008, 14:25

Wow!!!!! Have any of you people ever read any other blogs about the other high yielding banks? You can’t find one bank online or anywhere that doesn’t have complaints. Here, we have a black owned and operationed bank, paying one of the highest, if not THE highest yielding interest anywhere and you find something to complaint about. If you have questions about how their business is conducted and how long it will takes - just ask before you open up the account. Doing business online is certainly different and all banks are still trying to improve their services. The bank pays 5.30% interest, that’s higher then ANY other bank, BLACK OR WHITE, that I’ve found and I’ve researched them all. Steve Harvey gave you the hook up. This is a savings account, NOT a checking account. So what if you can’t access the money right away, it’s still earning the highest interest I know available. UFB’s also difficult to get your money, they encourage you to open a checking account for easy assess, but they don’t pay as high as One United. Open the account with the minimum until you get it up and running. Here’s a black bank competing right up there with THEM and you’re critizing. You should be proud they are competing for your business with the BIG BANKS. I AM. No, maybe they’re not the best at everything, but in these hard times when banks are paying people as little as .25%, I’m putting my money where is will do ME the most good. But if you’d rather stay with a white bank where they are paying you less interest on your hard earn money that’s up to you. I’m looking tfor the HIGHEST PAYING INTEREST. WHAT ARE YOU REALLY LOOKING FOR? I GUESS YOU’D RATHER FIGHT THAN SWITCH!

Wow i am glad that i read this before open my account with oneunited bank.I call the costumer service and need help. She was not helpful and she is so short with me.I think because of my eurasian accent, she refuse to assit me.After that i told her that i have over $100,000.00 did not earn much interest , she sound better, but i think i will not deal with suck stupid (bad costumer service like this bank.I will stay with my wachovia bank.

  37. horace meesly, 30 January 2008, 14:40

this is what you get when you deal with black people.

  38. javalasu, 30 January 2008, 19:45

I have been having a lot of trouble getting my account open with OUB I started about three week ago, and I am still not able to log into the account, I went into the branch near my home on Crenshaw in Los angeles, and they were rude and couldn’t tell me anything, I received an email saying that my $1000 was transfered into the account but I still can’t log in, I definitely will wait before I tranfer any more of my saving.

I was about to open a savings with them, since they currently have the highest rate (at 5.15%) and my ING, HSBC, FNBO, and Wamu accounts have all dropped (I have moved over $20,000 from all four of those banks without any problems) but I think I will just go to e-trade at 4.40% and a free $25 (etrade.com/25cash)!
Hopefully that rate won’t drop for a while!

    Thanks for the heads up!

I just stopped payment on my check to open my account sent to them luckily before it reached there, hopefully they don’t find a way to charge me just for that.Funny one of the bloggers mentioned being turned down for a savings account,I had the same problem with Amtrust Direct, they too didn’t want to take my 40k off my hands.I wonder how trustworthy all these high yield online banks really are?I have not had any luck yet opening an account with a decent rate.

I recently tried tried opening an account before I had found this site. I started the application process then received an e-mail stating I’d been accepted. Below is e-mail response:
our application for a new OneUnited Bank account has been received.
However your account cannot be opened until you have finished the entire application
process. Please make sure that you have completed the signature form and have funded your
account (either electronically or by mailing a check).

The part of concern for me was that, the only thing needed finishing was to transfer the money. I felt very uncomfortable transferring $10,000 when my on-line access was still be created. This is very different from the many other banks that offer similar benefits. This bank requires a minimum deposit of $1,000 before you actually have the on-line account setup. With banks like ING & FNBO they first deposit a small amount of funds into your account, complete with access before deposition your hard earned cash. Because of this concern I wanted to call them before transferring money and aski them why I needed to send money first when I had not created an account online to see the transfer process. I tried calling them four times, waiting to get though on one call for 10 minutes. I’ve had no luck yet of getting through. I then searched and found this site. I’m waiting to ask these questions before I continue on. I will most likely not follow through by sending money to them first. I realize that every bank has complaints but no on-line bank should require you to send money before you’ve setup an account of $1,000 or more.
    Thanks,

Wow I was ready to open a account, thank goodness for this blog. I have a account with GMAC and they have cut their rates so low, I am looking elsewhere. Looks like you saved me one big problem lady ,thank you so much.

I set up a OUB account using a check from our local savings bank, and did so before seeing all these posts. There was a confusing period between when they said they received the money and when I had access to the online account, but it all is working now. Their telephone help line typically has a long wait, but when I’ve waited it out, the person at the other end of the line did, in fact, answer my questions and resolve my problems. These posts certainly give me pause in moving a big chunk of money out of my Emigrant account and into OUB, but I just wanted to say that the account access thing was a momentary hiccup. Their web site seems really no worse or better than the ING or Emigrant sites. To me, the big question is, since their rates are compounded quarterly, how high will it be three months from now?

Gee… I wish I had read your post before I opened the account (because of the 5.30% apy that attempted me). Crap. I hope I can close this account soon enough.

I opened an account with this bank in January. It was a bit slow to get all set up, but I figured that was because I opted to mail them a check rather than use the electronic transfer. I might have been a little more concerned if they had taken my money through EFT and then took some more weeks to even get the account opened. Still, I’m patient, so I just waited.

I had a little trouble getting started with the online account because I didn’t recall it asking for a password and I got an email saying it was ready, but I didn’t have a password. I called customer service, got through right away, and with their help got into my account and able to set up a new password. The person I spoke with was very polite and helpful.

So far I have no complaints with this bank, except that the interest rate has dropped dramatically since I signed up for it, which is disappointing. I was using the account for savings, so of course I want highest interest rate possible.

And, P.S., for the record I’m a white man and really couldn’t care less about supporting any particular community, but I do have to say after reading everything here as well as comments elsewhere online, I can’t help but wonder if this is some sort of racist targeting of this bank because it’s black owned? My experience so far has not been anything like what I’m reading from other people … and we don’t know who people are behind these comments and blogs, right? It has made me feel more cautious about continuing to deposit money with them, though, unfortunately.

I submitted the comment on January 18, 2008 about the difficulties I experienced in setting up my account at One United. I’m happy to give this update. The problems I experienced initially were resolved the following week, and I have been making significant deposits since then with no issues. Since this is purely a savings vehicle for me, I have not attempted to make any withdrawals or transfers out of the account, but I am satisfied with my ability to access my account info online. While the APY has decreased over time, it still is the highest I’ve been able to find.
